I'm over 30 and just picked up a pencil for the first time six months ago (to sketch, that is). I'm in the 3D animation program at the Art Institute of California, LA (in Santa Monica), just started my 3rd quarter. I would love to hear some suggestions for improvement. These are highlights from my first sketchbook.

(all images copyright 2005 by Brian Bartram, not that it would impress anybody if you passed them off as your own).

Thanks gang,

B

if your able to, you should definetly try taking a figure course at that Art Institute, it will help with drawings faces, bodys, and overall just the use of a pencil better
also you may want to explore charcoal too...it was a personal strenght i had

these look good but you may want to plan your pieces out more...use shapes to determine what the shoulders of the woman would look like and how the muscles around her neck in her collarbone would interact with her arms

also....you definetly have to use references to see any improvement otherwise you'll be making the same mistakes over and over

my last piece was just updated after i took a 6 week course at CMU over the summer(im 16) and i think i already see a great improvement(im emberrased to look at my old work)

I agree with taking figure drawing classes. 3d starts as 2d first. You can also join us in the anatomy foum here....http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177
And join the life drawing thread to help you. I hope this helps.
