Greetings from TOmrUG!
Our next Toronto mental ray User Group meeting is just one week away! R.S.V.P to info@tomrug.org as soon as possible, seats are filling up quickly!
Two experts from RhinoFX, Vadim Turchin and Jesse Clemens, will be giving a presentation for your viewing and learning pleasure. To learn more about RhinoFX and their work, see www.rhinofx.com (http://www.rhinofx.com/).
Vadim is a graduate of the Vancouver Film School and has been a TD since 1999. His focus has been on dynamics, shading and lighting. Vadim worked for The Mill, Psyop and Massive prior to joining RhinoFX this year. Jesse has been at RhinoFX as a TD since 2003. He studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a double major in Animation and Computer Science. Jesse's responsibilities include developing workflow methodologies and pipeline tools, writing shaders, developing project management software, as well as helping out with the occasional effects shot.
Jesse and Vadim have summed up their presentation as follows:
We are going to be discussing the use of mental ray at RhinoFX, a mid-sized New York production company specializing in photorealism. Vadim is going to discuss artistic implementations of mental ray shaders and rendering techniques used to achieve the high level of realism our clients demand. He will be showing several RhinoFX spots and discussing the advantages that mental ray provided in achieving the look, including the use of sub-surface scattering, final gathering, and ambient occlusion. Jesse is going to talk about using custom shaders in mental ray and developing a flexible Maya/mental ray pipeline.
Note that this meeting is open to the graphics community as a whole, however we encourage people to be familiar with rendering concepts (as mentioned above) and have a basic familiarity with mental ray. The presentation will be assuming this level of knowledge.
