View Full Version : After Doom; ID planning to turn Quake into Movie as well?

Quake Following Doom To Film
Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, told SCI FI Wire that a movie based on their Quake series was discussed long before a Doom film was in the works. As the Doom movie was bounced around between Warner Brothers and Universal Pictures, the game creators began pursuing an idea to make Quake into a film as well. "There has been talk about a Quake movie," Hollenshead said in an interview. "We would be interested in pursuing that. We had a good experience with Lorenzo [di Bonaventura] and John [Wells, the producers] and the cast [Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Rosmund Pike and others], as well as Universal."
The trick with turning the Quake games into a film is that the games include very different environments. "The challenge for Quake is what to draw from for the movie," Hollenshead said. "Quake 2 and 3 are very different, and Quake 4 is kind of a prequel to 2. So for a movie, we will probably draw from the Quake 2 and Quake 4 universe—an alien race from another planet that has attacked the Earth. That sort of thing."
Will it matter if the Doom film does well or not? "It won't make much difference to us, we see everything independently," Hollenshead said. "But in the ranks of Hollywood, if they see the Doom movie as successful, it will raise the interest level and they would want other game movies and come to us."
Doom opens Oct. 21 and is being released by Universal Pictures, a division of NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.com.

Well, Quake at least has a coherent plot. I mean with Doom, you have demons? from hell? like the chrsitian hell or i dunno? Pretty weak. Quake 2 had a pretty good intro IMO.

i'm not defending doom's storyline, or lack thereof, but come on. that has got to be the worst synopsis of doom i've ever heard.

Doom had enough of a interesting basis to draw upon in order to write a decent screenplay, which unfortunately doesn't seem to have happened. The story basis for Quake 2 and 4, in my opinion, seems moreso like a dozen other films out there than, say, Doom, and therefore more of a cliche "go kill the alien invaders" story. I think it would be interesting to see a Quake film, and sure, I'd be the first one in line to see it, but if you want to talk about which game franchise had more potential as a FILM franchise? It'd have to be Doom.
At least, it WOULD have been...if it weren't for the people who thought this piece of trash that's being passed off as "Doom" was somehow "brilliant."
so we have a doom movie, a halo movie and a quake movie. i wonder, how long will it take to valve and crytek jump on the same wagon with half life and far cry?

Out of all of those, Half Life seems to make the most sense to me. It has an actual story line and is sort of a mystery.
I just watched that doom trailer and the camera viewpoint (like you were used to playing the game) makes me nauseous. gah.

I though half-life was already getting made.

Last thing I heard about Valve (Yurok bless their awesomeness) and movies was this:
Director: So then Gorden falls in love wi-...
Valve (gets up and leaves the room without a word)
Uwe Bolle has the rights to make a Fry Cry movie.

And then producers wonder why people are not going to the movies anymore...

Last thing I heard about id Sofware and movies was this:
Writer: We'd like to have monsters resulting from genetic mutations...
Director: Right! And then the DoomGuy finds out that his sister is a UAC scientist at the Olduvai Research Facility on Mars!
Writer: So then the DoomGuy and his sister decide to patch things up after not speaking to each other in quite some time...
id Software: BRILLIANT!!!

i wonder which one of these "games-to-movies" will/might actual turn out to be good....
for that matter what was the last game-to-movie that was remotely good...
oh well, no matter how they turn out, more jobs for those in the industry. :)

I've always been an ID fan, ever since I played doom as a 8 year old. I've been a quaker all my life, I've even developed a fondness for Doom III. But seriously... The Doom flick looks so horribly out of taste that I can't even bear myself to see it. The Rock? Let me just go outside and throw up..
I'm not a big fan of Peter Jackson's movies, neither of Halo but if they succeed in making something good it's a step in the right direction.

quake 2 was an awesome game. not sure how that would work as a movie. it would be cool if a movie was done for half life. so they are going to do a halo movie too. wow, doom, quake, halo...interesting.
this is off topic, but anyone going to see the fog, i just watched the old version of it on sci fi. i didn't have a clue that the new one was a remake.
hey bentllama when halo 3 comes out is there going to be a making of dvd. the one for halo 2 was really cool. i watched it quite a few times before i even played the game.

wow. i was soooooo out of shape and fat during that making of...halo 2 ruined my health...now 80 lbs lighter and eating lean, I feel better...so if we do another 'making of' for whatever title we are working on, it will be fun...still, I had a lot of fun during that making of...especially firing MP5 SD's with the spec forces guys...rock!
I know everything will suck, but I'm really hoping I'll have a nice experience with Doom movie
Maybe it's the lack of experience :\

Quake I is the best FPS I've ever played, and just because of the atmosphere... I was delighted by EVERY second I spent playing that game. I have yet to see something that matches that.
As for the Doom movie, I will avoid it at all costs (that will include plane flights too). I've seen the previous several times at the theaters, and man... that movie is gonna su** soooooo bad.... (That's my very personal opinion, of course).

Nah, we just think you're overly commerced lunatics who live in a world held up by politicians and where you spend more and more money to get your society more and more decadent whilst making sure one part of it gets exptonentionally more poor and where nothing that can't be used to make money with is left unused as we have to make money or we'll have to think of valuable things to do and our society can't handle that.
Ok, I'm done.
No, that's just the general image at times ;) the Americans I talk with are most distinctly not that way ;)

Hollywood and Id are both desperate to maintain and/or regain their relevance and success. It's a perfect match.
I can see the preview for Quake the Movie now: "From the makers of DOOM comes the most eagerly anticipated, action packed thrill ride since DOOM. In a vaguely defined futuristic world, one man must stand up for whats right and kill everything, BUT THIS TIME ITS PERSONAL".

Wasn't it personal from the moment he slept with your girlfriend?
Yes, well, now he made it MORE personal!
Don't think it can get more personal as sleeping with your girlfriend.
