I started a thread sometime ago in WIP/3D still but no one wrote back and I suppose that this guy applies more to WIP/Game Art.

He is about 5000 tris and my first character. Well the last was a disaster so we wont count him. The aviator has 2 color maps and was created in Maya 5.0

Please give me some c&c, especially on texturing.

Also I don't know how to do the eyes. Some help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

Not too bad for a first try!

Since you've asked for comments on the textures mostly...I will start there!

First of all here is a pretty good eye tutorial. http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/eyeTut.html

It is for making a real eye ball but I'm sure you can apply this to any style you want.

Secondly your textures, they have a pretty good feel to them but they lack depth. Right now you have no depth at all! For example...there should be some sort of shadow under the sheep skin collar. Also, do not use just straight up photo's for textures. You gotta adjust them a bit and hand paint them to give them a "real" "not pasted" feel.

The leather texture the cracks and such are also too large. Remember to keep scale in mind.



You seem to have a pretty good eye for detail so far...now you just need to push yourself further and learn about depth, shadow and highlights. Here is a good game model that a fellow just posted that is similar to what you have here. Maybe it will give you some ideas.

I gotta agree with Twitchy here...it's a good 1st attempt and his reply has covered pretty much what I would've said, keep at it tho'...you don't make progress unless you practice...and have fun...:)

So what textures stand out as being terrable, discarding the depth factor? I know the helmet and the leather on the coat definitly need a makeover.

Also my problem with the eyes is that I don't know how to model them onto the character? Do they actually get connected to the mesh or do I just place a seperate ball into the socket.

The main thing that stands out about the texture is its rather obvious that it is a bunch of copy-pasted photos with some soft edged erasing around the sides of them. Don't be afraid to paint in some ambient shadows to help the different materials to stand out, etc. Don't be afraid to just paint some of your textures too!

The model's anatomy is much weaker than the texture however. Your proportions are about right on the torso and arms. However the head and legs are very freaky; the legs are about half the length they should be, and especially the chin area of the face is too pinched and jutting.

Some simple fast tweaks could make a big difference on this model, keep at it!

I was pretty much aware of my problems with proportions but it is too late to go back and fix them now, right? Everyone says never start texturing until your model is complete.

His chin is too V shaped and he has cankles with stuby legs, lol.

Do you guys know of any tutorials for painting leather?
