At a special event for members of the press Wednesday morning, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to finally end the rumors about "One more thing..." First up on his list of announcements was a new iMac, which is thinner than previous models and includes a built-in iSight camera and Media Center-like capabilities.

A new application dubbed "Front Row" provides a 10-foot interface that lets iMac users control music, video and pictures while relaxing on a sofa. Text and graphics are enlarged for viewing at a distance.

The refreshed iMac comes also with an iPod-like remote control, which includes only 6 buttons and a slim design. In his keynote Jobs said the remote is much easier than Microsoft's 40-plus button remotes designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Also included with the iMac is a new program called "Photobooth" for making fun pictures.

The new iMac is priced at $1,299 USD for the 1.5 GHz model with 17-inch widescreen LCD display and $1,700 USD for the 2.1 GHz model with 20-inch widescreen display.

cause god knows if you want to go to chapter 17 of your dvd movie or switch audio channels, you won't be able to with the apple. you know, if they didn't compare the controllers, it would of been fine.

besides that, i like the camera built into the iMac and love the photobooth, making the screen "flash" for the picture is brilliant.

and the video ipod, a gimmick for all the people who bought an ipod to re-buy another one.

One thing of note as well, the new iMac uses DDR2 550MHz memory and PCI Express graphics now. Surprises me that we see these features in the iMac line before the Powermac/Powerbook line.

As for the iPod and video, they are incorporating video as a standard to their iPod line without changing the pricing. I see this as a better move than their iPod Photo fiasco. At least they understood that tehy should merge photo with regular iPods and they are doing the same with video.

On the low end, you get an extra 10GB of hard drive and video capabilities at no extra cost. On the highend, just added video at no extra cost.

Is it a gimmick... maybe. It may convince those on the fence about getting an iPod to get one now. For people who already own iPods, this is a substantial upgrade to the line. Whether they want video or not is up to them.

EDIT: Oh, and there is already a news thread going on regarding this topic as well.

While many of you are busy whining that the video iPod is a 'gimmick'. I'm watching Pixar shorts and "Lost" inside of iTunes.

Let the product speak for itself.

i'm watching Lost and Pixar in my family room off a dvd/dvr. video on the ipod is only good for a fraction of the users, while audio is good for EVERYONE. i'm not spending $1.99 on a 320x240 video. they need to up the resolution so i can play it through my pc and watch on my tv at a good quality.

This is true - the ipod as a portable DVR would be great. You just plug it into your tv or the tv in the hotel room, etc. to watch your shows/movies. Also, if you could pull down sports or news wirelessly will on the go that would be great. But sitting around watching Lost or 'For the Birds' for the 3,000th time on a tiny screen with bad color and claiming it's somehow a great experience is just plain stupid. You would never 'choose' to watch it that way, only if you had no choice (like sitting on a bus).

I was pretty shocked that apple didnt offer various sizes for the video and the video should def be 99 cents if not free like they were before.
