Hey everybody!

I wasn't sure if this was strictly for computer 2d(photoshop, painter, etc.) or just 2d in general. Either way, here I go:
This is one of my first drawings I did in charcoal: a self-portrait. I was barely getting used to my drawing utensils, so the detail isn't that great. But hey, if I was even a half-decent artist, I'd have a job already. But I'm not, so here's more crap to stare at:

Questions, comments, or crits are welcome and more to the point, hoped for.

But I know better than that.
You're just going to take one look at this, decide it's not worth commenting on, and move on to some other thread by one of the many geniuses running around these forums.
Meanwhile, I'm sitting at home, checking these forums every day to see if anyone even bothered to say anything about this and wondering why I don't just give up, move to the country, get a job selling diesel at a local truck stop, and learn to be dull.

Or maybe I'll actually get someone to reply? Maybe this will be the end of my cgtalk losing streak? Maybe! Let's see if we can change my luck here, people! What do you say?

While you decide what you're going to do, I'll be in the other room here learning how to say "y'all" right.....

:)

He relax dude. Don't talk so low on yourself, everyone can see you have a talent. Don't throw that away.

This is a very good charcoal piece man. Only thing to crit here could be to show a bit more of the right corner o.t. mouth. And maybe some highlights in the eyes. But that could also be interpreted as me nitpicking.

Not much replies? That happens to most people that haven't posted much. I dunno why, it's just a fact. Hang in, post more great work, people will know you and the replies will follow.

Take care,
Jeroentje

Damn, I wish I could do that with charcoal. Excellent drawing and from a tough angle... for me at least.

moving to the country.... sellin' diesel...

Nice work. I'd have to agree with jeroentje on the crit. Also it seems that the beard is just a bit off to one side--doesn't quite align to the center of the face (but maybe that's how you really trimmed your beard). Again, maybe it's just nitpicking. Yo picked a tough point of view to draw and did a nice job of it.

I'm on a pretty fast connection, and it took a while to download your image to my computer. Maybe people on slower connections aren't waiting for it to download. Maybe if you optimized the image for the web, it would help. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Dain

the only crit I have is the eyes. ur left eye (on our right) is a bit off somehow. and it would be nice if they had some shine or reflection in them... they look too black now :) other than that, post more! :buttrock:

hi dude ,

i know how you feel by myself , and i hate it - this ****n developement that you*ll get nothing if they dont know you :annoyed:

but youre painting is really good particularly this special face expression .

maybe you should go more into digital painting to get more acknowledgment in this "digital" community

Point is that some people post the same stuff on different boards and don't come back here, even after replies. I have the feeling that a lot of regulars just wait for a while to reply to a newbee and wait to see if they're stayers, or if they just want to rocket their portfolio over the net.
A shame for people who seriously want some crits... but like I said. Have some patience, it happens on more boards.

Cheers, Jeroentje
btw, Let's not turn Fungusmonkey's thread in a newbee/reply discussion ;)

Great good galloping jesus! Somebody replied! WooHoo! Goodbye mudflaps and 10-gallon hats, Hello cgtalk! Thank god. I thought for a minute there I was the only one who could see my posts.

Jeroentje: Thanks for kicking it off! As for the highlights in the eyes, and the mouth: I couldn't get a mirror to cooperate for the angle that I wanted to get, so I took a couple quick snapshots with my Polaroid and used them as reference. Considering that the actual piece is 12' by 18', it took me forever to get it to look right. Unfortunately, now that I look at it again, I see that it could use a little work. Also unfortunately, I had to apply a fixative to the paper to get it to scan without smearing all the charcoal everywhere, so I can't fix it. C'est la vie!

....oh, and I'm not really being that hard on myself. Pretty much everything I do is tongue-in-cheek. :)

DainBramaged: You got a good point there. Since I uploaded the pic to my server recently, I still had it in memory, so it loaded pretty fast. Now that I'm on another computer, though, I'm thinking the next pic will be smaller, with a link to the bigger image. Thanks!

Somlor, Nibo, PsychedelicMind, and DKnight: You guys rock! Thanks for speaking your minds, I appreciate it. Any of you guys need some cowboy boots and a can of tabacky? :)

I'm not sure what the S.O.P. is on this, but here's another one of my charcoal drawings. This is on colored paper, so I also tried using white conte crayon to get lighter highlights. It's supposed to be Benecio Del Toro (Traffic, Usual Suspects, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), but I'm not sure how good of a likeness it is. :surprised It looks like him to me, but I'm the artist, so I don't count.

Should I have started another thread for this pic? I'm not sure. Oh well. At least this time it's a smaller pic.

As always, comments and crits are welcome. Don't make me start watching rodeos.... :D

Looks pretty good to me. I could see a definitive likeness to Benicio before i even read the description of the pic. However he does look a bit older than the real Benicio. Not that it matters much. It's stilla very good drawing imo.

Cheers,

Jeron

Yes, that is Benicio allright :)
If you don't know anymore, when doing a portrait, look at it through a mirror. Is a real eye opener.
