i've been hearing mixed opinions on animators and mel. an instructor/art director told me that animators don't necessarily need to know mel. however, i've heard from other people that most studios require you to know mel.

i've only worked a couple freelance jobs and none required me to know even a bit of mel scripting. but if i were to work at a large studio, gaming or feature, would i be required to know it?

just a question that i've been pondering.

I wouldn’t say I have buckets of experience, but I have never heard of a studio that requires an animator to know mel… But I would imagine this to be relevant to a TD or a rigger.

On a side note, if you can learn mel it’s a very handy thing to know – I know some ‘very’ basics to help me on the rigging side but as an animator I wouldn’t put it at the top of the list of things to learn.
