Front page worthy!!!

This is amazing work. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, I really wish we could get a rigging tutorial (or 12 LOL) out of you. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

So on the cat character, is that flexmotion controlling the arms and spine? Any chance you could release one of these rigs, minus the geo of course, so we could study it?

and you should be selling tutorials , I Would pay....

Those riggs were a joy to use Marek. You really know how to make Messiah sing. I had all but blotted that project out of my mind. . . I need to dig those models out and put em in my reel damn it. I didn't do so bad on those textures now that I see some of them in motion.

Good job. Front Page.

Very well done :)

edit: I forgot to mention I like the music with this too- it suits it well. I first really noticed it when you were swinging the cat character's hips about- moves to the music for a bit there I'm sure :)

10-12-2005, 02:31 AM
good work - gave me lots of ideas! Gotta love the axis controls in messiah - looks a hell of a lot similair to some pixar style controls. As with the fish - lovely, procedural animation - its that based of sin multipliers on rotations? or are you doing offset stuff.

Ive seen a fish setup like this before, (but can really say ;)) - ill have to do some more procedural animation type things.

Anyway cool!

WOW! Thats absoloutley incredible!

There are so many superb thing on this reel:
fat guys chin not clipping his collar
feathers on the bird retracting
realtime dynamic bones on the fish
cats pelvis and tail
cartoony guys stretchy and bendy arms

You must be an animators best friend with all those super efficient, automated rigs!

5 star job for sure. I hate rigging and struggle with the most basic of setups, so i can really appreciate the work gone into this.

Did you make the models as well? Theyre great - especially the cat guy.

Thanks for plugging this, CGtalk folk! I woulda missed it otherwise!

Probably after I complained so much about all the little armatures being hard to see when there was so much going on in the scene. :-)

So Billy can you give us some more insight on how good Marek's rigs were to work with?

Wegg
10-12-2005, 07:29 AM
It sure was an eye opener. Especially the fish. I had never seen anything like it. I remember after we knew we were animating fish . . . doing some tests with motion clips to try and get the swimming motion down. . . and being told "you won't need to worry about that much." I was like. . . Ok. . . Then we got the riggs and it was. . . Wow. I had no idea how it all worked but it was amazing. I didn't like the Armatures though. That bugged me.

Then with the Tale City project the armatures were gone but. . . ooooh boy it got cool. Options for everything. Again. . . very mind blowing and if the producers and directors weren't so "special" I probably would have been able to use them more. But. . . I didn't.

I'm only just now, like a year later leaning how he did some of the things in there.

It makes me a little sad to see the XSI stuff in the reel. . . but I understand. You have to go where the work is.

That's really REALLY REALLY great work !!

It's the kind of rigg, that any animator wanna animate with.
Great sense of details in the rigg, with all the controllers for instance, or "second motion" ect..., and it's look like so "animator friendly".

Again, great rell !

@ My Fault and Parsec3d :

Like I already said some time ago, I might do a tutorial CD/DVD if get some more time - but right now I have to concentrate on other stuff, sorry…

My Fault, the arm and leg flexing is done with flexmotion, the spine setup is a custom flexmotion-type script I’ve done to get around the curve flipping problem that you get with flexmotion. I can’t/don’t want to realease this stuff right now, since it’s part of my working capital, sorry - but I might do it when the time has come… ;)

@ Wegg :

You sure did a great job on the texturing!

But where did you see XSI in that reel…? It’s all messiah - though XSI is definitely a great soft for rigging too ;)

@ Razr :

That’s not true man! :) You’ll always need animators, no automation does the job for you, it is just meant to simplify certain tedious tasks, without taking the liberty from the animator’s artistic expression - I try to make the rig as flexible as possible for the animator, you can turn almost every feature on or off, like e.g. arm or head alignment to the body, and in case of the fish, you can animate everything by hand, and seamlessly blend between keyframe, dynamic and procedural animation

Btw, this kind of stuff can certainly be done in other softs as well, but probably not as easily ;)

@ eek :

The procedural motion on the fish is done through sine functions, offset in time on each joint

@ Leebert :

The wireframe primitives are the usual rig control handles for the animator ;)

@ Andy H :

The only model I did in this reel is the girl’s head. The cat model is done by Talecity Productions, the company behind the Talekeeper project

@ sforsyth :

Ooops! Thanks, I’ll correct that at the occasion ;)

@ sphere :

Is that a job offer…? :p

Thanks again all!!! :D

Attention PMG. Hire this guy. It's the only way we are going to get any tutorials. And his stuff is practical, usable information.

I will say this: What if everyone invested in you up front to create some tutorials? Surely we could all make it worth your while. Give us a total figure and we'll start a car wash or something. I'm serious.

You could even swap out the proprietary models with something not proprietary or more simplified and save those out as project files and let us analyze them. We would pay for that as well.

Very nice job. As a fresh starter...I am just in awe of the complexity and detail you are able to apply to your characters movement with such control. I have much respect for what you have accomplished.

I have done some short production reels of my own and wanted to merely comment on the composure of your piece. It starts out great and I am really brought in and captured with a strong start. However as the piece goes on, I feel as though your "least-strongest" work is saved for the end not leaving a the viewer with the same energy that they had in the beginning. Maybe bring it full circle and end with a couple quick clips of full animations like you have in the beginning as opposed to the movements with the whale.

Overall, I'm inspired and want to work towards what you have accomplished. Good Luck.

LOL that is one of the coolest and craziest ideas i have ever heard of. i like it.
imagine starting a web site where users join up, donate via paypal or maybe a subscription and then with the funds recieved the site pays highly talented artsist to make tutorial DVD's. think of the money not as a bribe but as a sort of scholarship type thing, allowing the artist to create the DVD were previously it would'nt have been possible. and then those who donated (a certain ammount) get the DVD free, those who donated less get it half price or something and the rest just buy it normally...
and to avoid confusion a full list of the tpic(s) in the DVD would be up before hand...
hahaha its just so crazy it might work :D

Hey, thanks again for all your compliments and encouragements!!! :)

@ alias_marks : I think you're right about the missing energy at the end of the reel. I made a new version with the Kaluokahina film sequence at the end and I think it makes the reel more balanced. Thanks for the suggestion :) To all, I'll upload the new version later today and swap the files - I'll post a message before I do so, so that I hopefully won't break any peoples downloads...

@ krisr : the tail is basically just 3 manual controls that control the tail base, the lower tail curl and the tip curl. This way the animator has more control over the tail animation and delays than with a fully automated chain IMO

@ Taron : thanks for the nice words man :) I'm glad if my reel can give you a boost, and I hope that it helps to show off the capabilities of messiah

@ Virtual FM : hey Fernando! Still on cookies? :D How are ya man?

Excellent reel, and like others have said, very inspirational!

Regarding the structure of the reel, I thought it was standard practice to post the strongest work at the beginning to make an immediate impact in case people don't watch all the way. Although all your work is so good that you probably don't have to worry about that. :)

Another thing: if you guys all decide to do the "put the money together to fund a tutorial DVD", I would recommend using www.fundable.org (http://www.fundable.org) to set it up. It has a very cool fundraising management concept that should work perfectly for something like this.

wat was that???
i've just seen unbeleivable rigs
controls spreading, sliders floating everywhere , wat was that? CG? i bet

the reel starts normal,
the cat makes you think like "aha good trick for the waist and tail",
the toon char... "i've never seen this before"
the fat face guy... "that was for sure brilliant"
then the tongue man..."greaat wat kind of rigger is he, didn't leave anything"

then comes the bird and fish to make you freeze on your seat
its superb rigging
the wings, the fish tail and fins, that lion fish
it seams that bones know how to fly and swim :)
animators will just open the rig and say "hey fish! swim to frame 120" :)

superb work maks
one of the best reels i've watched

imagine starting a web site where users join up, donate via paypal or maybe a subscription and then with the funds recieved the site pays highly talented artsist to make tutorial DVD's. think of the money not as a bribe but as a sort of scholarship type thing, allowing the artist to create the DVD were previously it would'nt have been possible. and then those who donated (a certain ammount) get the DVD free, those who donated less get it half price or something and the rest just buy it normally...
and to avoid confusion a full list of the tpic(s) in the DVD would be up before hand...
hahaha its just so crazy it might work :D

It's not crazy at all. He just needs to give us a price on what would make it worth his efforts, then I will personally start a fund raising site to get the money until he caves in. No kidding. As far as PMG is concerned. Can you f-ing imagine him and Taron in the same room? Come on guys, you will kick A.

I thought of a similar experiement with creating a "See Anna Kornikova in all her glory.com" fund raising effort. Just $1.00 per male and there would HAVE to be enough to get her to do it. :)

@ krisr : the tail is basically just 3 manual controls that control the tail base, the lower tail curl and the tip curl. This way the animator has more control over the tail animation and delays than with a fully automated chain IMO

Ah ok. I saw the one sphere rotating and I thought you had some fancy setup that would automatically whip the tail around based on the rotation and/or speed of the rotation of that control sphere. Anyway, good stuff!

sigh ... watching something this advanced teaches me only one thing. - I AM NOT GOOD ENOUGH yet - I have absolutly no idea how to make some of these things. However I'm sure that I would be able to do a so-so version of these bendy gooy features, but it would never ever work as smoothly as your version.

thans m8, now I'm all depressed the rest of the day ;)

Hey man... I will not say how cool that was beacuse I think it has been said enough.

I just have to ask, could you please point us aspiring riggers-animators to learning resources to know more about this stuff?

Any books, tutorial DVDs, excersices, Yoga positions... scientology principles... anything..! Im studiying 3D animation in school right now, and we only cover the basic "stick-to-reality" rigs....

Any words of wisdom as to where to point our efforts will be greatly appreciated.

El Nacho.

P.S: That's the coolest TD reel I've ever seen.

Wow, Awsome...

How long did it take you to do the 'design' part of the rigs? Eg. the cat? Did you get a list to complete or did you design the whole rig and ranges yourself?

Anyway, beautiful work and you deserve all the praise you're getting.

Hi Maks, I was just wondering: What was your background when you entered 3D animation ? Do you have a more technical or a more artistical background ?

A bit of both I guess... I studied Architecture :)

Aah, I see ... In my experience, people involved in CG can be divided into the artists and the technical guys and usually there is a communicational barrier :banghead: between those two camps. I guess as a TD it is important to understand both worlds.

Fred,

I think you guys need to, somehow, get Maks to do a tutorial DVD(s) on rigging!

I'd order it tommorow!

David,

again, it's not depending on pmG if I'd do a tutorial DVD or not, it's simply a matter of available time and dedication, wich I just don't have at the moment, sorry... I appreciate your claim though :) As I said, if ever I have some time available I'll think of it, but please don't quote me on this ;)

Maks - Rigging DVD
Taron - Rendering DVD
bundle package and add water.

Should the ground be animatable, whats the advantage to that, Maks?

I've also got animatable ground for a character - for steps or change in ground height in general.

i played around with the file you sent and it really helped me out a lot.

Thanks

I have a couple questions.

I have never understood the difference between IK2D and IKTel or any of the other options for that matter. What's the difference?

Also, is the UPVector used to keep the toe and foot IK from spinning on the bank channels? I applied it as well as the knee control and really like it. I just wanted to get some background on the reasons for using it so I'm not just blindly using it.
