2/6/06 (or 6/2/06 for North America, or 06/6/2 for China :))

Hello.

This thread starts out slowly with some old attempt, however I'm now using this thread to post my sketches and speedpaintings as i do them; please check the latest page, and feel free to leave a comment! I'm always looking for opinions and fresh eyes (mmm..eyes!!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would love some feedback on this piece. Painted in photoshop since I became inspired to try out some of the great brushes here --http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=200222 it's supposed to show a fighter jet of some description shooting from a huge bank of cloud...I just think it's lacking something...

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Skies.jpg

any advice?

-thanks

other then that its quite lovely

Had a rethink of the composition and the colouring, as well as the type of cloud (thanks to reference!):

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Move.jpg

It's massively unfinished, planning to add more hi tech stuff, somewhere. Any further thoughts welcome.

I think that colour wise, the original is superior. Nice work so far, good luck. :bounce:

teal-k - thank you for the advice

jmcwilliams - i think i'll keep the latter composition and maybe reintroduce some of the original colours; thanks! :)

OK, another post, another version: I'm happier with this one, redid the colour to include more
purples and pinks, and added some more clouds...I love clouds :bounce:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Skies3_small.jpg

Any thoughts about colour, composition etc. welcome, as always...

thanks,

yeayyy looks fantastic i would make the clouds a ittle more puffy though :)

Just my opinion of course, but I still much prefer the original  I even like how it is bursting out the clouds, maybe just make it a little further out to clear up the composition. haha, sorry if that's not what you want to hear.

Just found this thread, and I gotta say the the original just destroys the newer ones. Composition-wise, colour-wise, texture-wise. The only thing the original needs in my opinion is some shadows/darks on the bottom parts of some of the cloud forms, especially the ones towards the top left quadrant.

Awesome.

audit

lol i'm a bit confused now, but cheers everyone for comments.

teal-k: thanks, i've got rid of those clouds now heheh
jmcwilliams: yar, i think you're right - the first one was just beginner's luck i suppose...
jabuhrer: thank you for the advice, i'll take it.

But anyhow, I worked this morning on a bit of 'hardware' to go in the painting:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Skies4.jpg

any opinions, advice welcome. this is still a wip after all!

thanks,

hi anyone who sees this, however briefly...I did this speed painting recently, might start to use this thread to collect my speedies together.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Untitled10a.jpg

...although...it might be cool to try and get this to a higher level. Any thoughts or ideas for the composition/colour scheme etc.? I'd love to hear!

audit,

Hmm, I like the color scheme so far, though I think what I would love to see digital artists investigate more is the color schemes of traditional artists.

Here is a webpage of a former teacher of mine, whose landscapes I just loved:

http://www.jcacciolagallery.com/Pages/Artists/Turner.html

I think what is lacking in your piece is a range of muted grayed town hues, which can often be quite beautiful when contrasted with more saturated colors.

Apart from the color scheme, I think that the structures just need to be firmed up, so that they look less organic. But you clearly have a great start! :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

I think I know why everyone (incl. myself) prefers the original.
The original has these very dark clouds at the bottom, suggesting pending doom or such ;-), which is nice.
Also there's a haze around the edges of the clouds (mostly on the upper part) that looks way more cooler then those on the other versions.

nice disturbing 'mothership' btw.

thanks guys:

rebeccak - wow - those are beautiful paintings, quite luminous. I will try and get something of that into this work - i agree that the colour scheme is a bit harsh and over-saturated. Thanks!

general midi - thanks :) the psychology aspect never occured to me before..!

interesting variations on the cloud theme. The second and third are my favorites. IMO the clouds just need to be sofened a bit.

I think collecting your images into one thread is a good idea!

gord -
thanks for your input! I think I've abandoned this painting, however :/ i've ben so intent on speedpaints recently that I really forgot about it, and I'd rather start afresh. Basically I'm not ready to work to a 'completed' image yet, I have a lot more practice to do. Anyhow I intend to start collecting images here...so watch out!! :D

awesome sketches audit. the only crit i have about the jet/cloud sketch you tried a couple times is that your clouds always seem to be a bit too grainy, almost like a sand cloud. perhaps try making your clouds look creamier. just my 2 cents.

keep it goin

rebecca: thanks for the encouragement :D ...tutorials, are you sure?? :surprised

pixelcritter: thanks for your two cents, it all helps - i think you're quite right about the sand cloud effect. That was a brush which i was obsessed with at the time, came from a download :D I really don't think I would go about that piece that way now, i know better. (forum lurking has its benefits)

beaux, cyborg JA - I'm sorry guys, I don't have a website. All I have on the web to call my own is a tiny bit of photobucket  Maybe I'll look into getting a site, at some point. I'm flattered you want to see more stuff, though. I'll try and oblige :D

The only 'finished piece', which is to say, something I've posted in the finished work section at CGtalk can be found here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=313417)

I agree! Audit, it's great to see all your work here! :)

The easiest way to showcase your work would be to create a CGPortfolio, which any CGTalk member can do for free:

http://portfolio.cgsociety.org/

As a CGTalk member you can post up to 5 images and have a very professional looking web presence.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but if you sign up as a CGSociety member ($29.95 / year) you can post an unlimited number of images and have access to the full gamut of CGPortfolio's features.

I really think you ought to do the free one at least. :)

Cheers,

I really love your ability to roughly sketch up an idea -- but I'd /really/ love to see something complete. You have the talent, why not take it to the next level? Concept art is wonderful, but bring it on! I almost felt frustrated looking at all this potential and feeling like none of it was finished, but casted aside for the 'next idea'. Anyway, I'll be watching!!

audit
05-02-2006, 12:03 AM
Sylanya - thanks for your comment. keep your eyes peeled!!

LabyrinthineMind - interesting comment. I think there is a point at which a work can be both complete and incomplete, and it's this point I'm aiming for...I know it's a long way away. This is why I don't spend too long on one piece; I think that speed keeps freshness and immediacy, and it's good training for the creative process. Of course, I understand what you mean...sorry you felt frustrated...that wasn't the point of the thread! I will be updating my Rembrandt master copy periodically as I add more depth and detail. For the moment this exercise is quite enough to satisfy my detailing instincts I can tell you..!! :wip: Hope you keep watching.

Runecaster
05-02-2006, 01:08 AM
^^^ Yeah I totally will! I understand you are really fleshing out the rembrandt's, and they look great -- but I really meant the sci-fi pieces (which I really dig). =D

audit
05-02-2006, 02:13 AM
Yeah. I still have ..trouble.. with those. I find them...well, put it this way - having seen some of the Amazing Work which the top sci-fi concepters keep churning out all over the web, it's awkward to post them. Stupid, I know but...I'm sure everyone has that feeling sometimes.

just one more tonight. also from DSF - 'Lancelot and Guinevere'. I thought up a new technique of adding soft light texture layers, and deleting bits with a full opac/hard brush. Worked quite well in this case, really roughs it up. that's a good thing for me!

Hi audit, just wanted to say I'm a big fan of your work! Your style is very loose and strong which I love (even though, as you know, I'm not really able to follow up on my own preferences in my work:)). Also, thanks for dropping by in my thread and explaining colour theory - I'm going to read up on it. My next project will be a landscape, I think for that I'm going to try something similarly loose and 'blotted' as these - and as the pic you sent me for that matter.

Hope to see more great work from you!

Yay, you're back!

The OFDW painting is turning out so beautiful! I meant to tell you there but that thread has been growing at a crazy rate and I'm very lost there :(. I really like how you have captured the softness in the face and the bulk of her clothes there!

...And yay for head sketches of course :D Wonderful use of textures! I think you can work a wee bit more on the nose and mouth/chin . Do you lose patience? That's one of my biggest problems, just wondering if it's the same with you....

audit

hiiri, heheh :D i still have exams so i'm not 'officially' back to painting regularly. However, i am still painting, so...that just about sums up my attitude to exams, i guess.

Thanks about the Zorn copy. I know what you mean about that thread, but it's always insane in the first week of OFDW, then people drift off a bit, so it should quieten down.

Patience...hm, yes i suppose i do run out of patience, but not particularly with any one bit, just, you know, overall. With these I'm really aiming for quick, accurate value shapes above all, so forgive if it's messy, i don't tend to rework these sketch-types :) it's strange...i'm so neat in life...lol

I wish I could say I want my practice to be in that direction too, I know it'd be superuseful, but for the moment I'm hooked on these character 'sketches' that are actually turning out to be minipaintings more and more...

hi maladie - no problem, glad to help..

hm, i've been considering your question about brushes. I have to say, I have amassed quite a large library of brushes over the past few months (about 300); i've picked up a load from the internet as well as making my own from time to time (from textures, paintings etc.). I can't say which ones I regularly use as I'm still exploring them myself and try to use different types for each speedpaint. However there are a few that I usually resort to. Would you like me to post a tut or some steps next time I do a speedpaint? that seems the easiest way to me...i can't think how to show you otherwise...

06-08-2006, 06:01 PM
so be it..first actual tutorial of mine:

First of all I'll cover my back by saying I'm still really only starting out, and that my current methods and workflow are likely to change enormously as I become more experienced.

I work in photoshop CS with a reference for the figure - about 1500x1100 on one layer until the final stage.

1. When starting, I usually fill the canvas somehow, to give me a base to work from. Lay down a gradient, fill with colour, and/or attack with texture brushes, it varies depending on whether I know what I'm going to paint. For this sketch I laid down an orange-brown gradient, quite muted, and not too extreme in value range. I have in mind a mood I'd like - a sort of luminous afternoon vibe; the figure has a cool light source, primarily cyan, with reddish-warm shadows. This gives the impression she is illuminated by daylight, from a window or such, but remains in an interior environment.

Here I've laid down the first tonal and chromatic areas of the figure. I used the chalk brush (think that's a photoshop default). I removed much of the initial gradient, deciding the it would compete with the figure. You can still see it a bit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R2.jpg

2. Continued blocking in of the shapes and colours. Generally, I like to invent my own colour scheme rather than following the reference, and pick my colours from the palette. I use very strong hues during these initial stages. I've begun to put in areas of reflected light, and different warm and cool areas in the skin. Skin is all kinds of colours really. I keep the right arm warm (in shade), and the left cool. This really gives the figure some impact and is a pretty evocative technique, I've found.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R3.jpg

3. Hm, some more work, and a little refinement, all in the body and dress. The head cam last when I did this - it worked out well since I had my colours more or less sussed by then.

Still using the chalk brush (it's a fantastic brush for creating textural interest with relatively few strokes), though I changed to the hard-round size-jitter for that bit of ribbing on the dress - nothing major. Changed the arm position, too (this was part of the ref which I changed).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R4.jpg

4. Moved on to the head. Same brush. Working out the colours gradually. I use the eyedropper about every 4-5 seconds; this helps to mix the colours around. If and when I find them becoming diluted, just pick afresh from the palette, or from another area of the skin which still has bolder hues.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R5.jpg

5. Happy with the body now (it's just a sketch!!). starting to deal properly with the face and hair. Same brush.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R6.jpg

6. Almost finished. I used a nice traditional-ish rough dry brush for some highlighting strokes on the hair, and the earring :D otherwise still chalk.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/R7.jpg

7. The FUN stage. Here I experiment with all kinds of brushes and layer modes. In this case I started out with several layers set to 'soft light' and broke out some nice brushes, ones I have custom-made, and others. I have a fantastic set of huge (2000 pixel) paint-splatter brushes which I used here. To create the red glow, I simply used lots of interesting brushes, with varying saturations of red, set to soft light, tinting but not destroying the groundwork. I also used a doubled layer set to multiply, which considerably darkened the whole thing.

An interesting technique is to lay down layer of solid or gradient colour, then set about deleting bits of it with texture brushes. I also have a habit of painting on bits of texture, then I sharpen-filter the layer, lower opacity and experiment with hue/saturation. All in all there were about..er, 20-30 layers of various kinds. I don't actually know since I merge each time I'm finished with a particular pattern or effect. There are so many variations I can't possibly list them all here. All I can say is just try stuff out!

Finishing that stage I readjusted the nose and eye, cropped the image, played with levels. Don't forget to add your monogram (the sign of a true arteeste)!

Some at 100%, to show you the full horror:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/86audit19/cgforums/Tut/_Regard_full.jpg

The final:

all told about 2hrs.

cheers.

Maladie

wow...immensely helpful. I really love your bold colouring!! It's nice to see that's the last thing you define instead of the first. That's a really interesting new insight for me. Can you tell me in which palette of CS the chalk brush can be found (Dry Media Brushes?)?

Thank you very much for this!

Runecaster
06-08-2006, 07:07 PM
You know, I made forum sigs for years. I'm quite well versed in using brushes and layer blending modes to get effects... but for some reason, I never /EVER/ thought about bringing that to painting... I thought that I could get the same effects by just painting... but apparently its OK to use these 'fx' techniques too.

I guess that is kind of naive of me to think I could get it all through just painting with a hard-round set to opacity heh. Just kidding - I do use custom brushes but not a lot - since you always ALWAYS see the 'artists' saying they ONLY use the hard-round set to opacity.

Bleh. I'm gonna do a few sketches with the way I used to 'paint' sig backgrounds and see what happens. :D :D :D

Cool I'll check it out next Maladie -- I did too - I don't have a practice thread anymore though - but you can see it here. (http://www.aequinox.com/paintings/jailhouse.jpg)

Maladie

Runecaster
06-08-2006, 09:44 PM
lol! You never fail to make me smile Maladie :) Umm - I just drew it all with blue at first, since that was what the ref image had -- did I mention I used a ref image? I did. I'm sorry I mentioned that on DA when I posted it but forgot to here - my bad. I can't do anything like that without a ref!!

Anyways, then I just went crazy with the brushes and after I was done with the blue, I made another layer and chose orange since it's a complement, then red - then green and la la la just had fun.

On accident I used the 'spiderweb' brush and just LOVED it, so went with it.

wow, you guys really had a field day with that tutorial! I'm glad you found it helpful, and that it inspired you to try out some new things - nice job there Maladie + Runecaster...but please, don't take anything in it as absolute, it's just one speedpainting.

Salubri3i - cheers man. glad I managed to teach something at least!!

Maladie - Sorry, I don't know where that brush is. My brush libraries are completely screwed since I've appended so many into one mega-palette...I -think- it's a default brush.

Runecaster - well, you've raised a controversial point there. I think it depends on the final look and style the piece requires - it's a very complex process since there are so many possibilities. However I can't think of anyone who is so exclusive, as to use only the hard-round. I think it's advisable to use that brush to lay out shapes and maybe values etc. but to be frank to use it all the time would be so damn boring. I want to treat Photoshop as a complete tool, and I won't ignore things if they're there to be used and can help the creation process! as Barontieri (http://www.barontieri.com/homepage.htm) said - 'they might as well hate the electricity' :D

06-10-2006, 03:12 PM
regarding the brush comment I made - about people claiming they only use the hard-round exclusively, I think you're right - I think they don't... but like to be elitist and say they do, so their skills seem higher - and that just bugs me. Even traditional artists use different tools to achieve texture. Michael Whelan has said he uses sponges, rolled rags, knives, bark and even a toothbrush to get the texture he wants with his oils and acrylics! And that man has won 13 Hugo art awards (not to mention dozens of others) and is considered one of the best (if not the best) Fantasy Artists out there today.

Nothing wrong with using a tool to its full potential, I say. But I still find it amusing that I didn't think I could use any other sort of brush. I didn't at first, either. hehe

I just get irritated in places like DA where people 90% of a photo manip in a painting, paint a little over it, and try to pass it off like they did it themselves. Gah!

But that's a WHOLE other ball of wax :D

hiiri - (congrats on your first!! :D) glad you liked the tutorial. i felt the red was a little too strong, unless it came from some kind of secondary source. i just love saturated skin tones, and warm colour in general. I'll get over it I'm sure...

runecaster - it's not just brushes, multiple layers and different layer modes too can be extremely useful. as i say, i'm still discovering things and refining how i use all these tools.

Really good audit. I can't get over your skill sometimes. It looks like you just dabbed away at it and still all the shapes and values are in the right place:). I like that style much more than the rendered smoothness a lot of people tend to go for!

I read in your portfolio this is just a hobby for you. That's not fair.

Audit!! I have a request :) Can you do the city scape from Blade Runner?

I'd love to see what you did with it... that movie... man, my husband and I watch it regularly - it's been a staple in our house for 'mood' when we're reading at night for /years/.

I LOVE that movie.

Excellent rendering of a very handsome, rugged and un-insane Harrison Ford.

Have you read the book?

audit
06-12-2006, 02:20 AM
maladie - too kind . sort of hobby, more a passion. I have trained all my life to be a musician, but recently discovering painting and concept art i'm changing my mind. really don't know yet where this digital art can take me.

runecaster - thx. THAT city?! woa, maybe if you could get a screencap of the aspect you mean - flyover, street etc. I don't own the film myself y'see. getting the refs from t internet. ...and I haven't read the book, or seen the film...intend to :D

great expression .. i really like your sketches audit

I like the outcome when you mix the chalkylook with the hard roundbrush look ... like the naked woman or the H.Ford Bladerunner pic :)

the last one is cool... would be better tough if you darkened the upper left side of the bg like on the right. You probably did it to hint at the light source but I think its enough to have those strong saturated texture areas on the figure. This way it just pulls the viewer to the corner

keep on painting
