Title: Dawn Shadows
Name: Attila Deák
Country: Hungary
Software: 3ds max, Photo-Paint

This is not a commercial image, it was made only for fun!

This is an image made for a hungarian 3D CG Architect Contest titled: Light and Volume.
The idea was to take an existing photo (staircase of Philippe Gazeau,46 rue de l'Ourcq, Paris, 1993)
and analyze to what degree the image could be reproduced using 3D
in perspective of lights and shadows. With this end in view the result may have too much contrast,
but the contest theme required this painting like picture.
The task was to make a substantive image as realistic as possible, but in the other way it should has got
a well placed view and an excellent composition too.
Modelling: The building in the background are my designs in the style of Mr. Gazeau,
using horizontal wood, and brick elements with warm colours. The bicycle model is
not mine, it's from the web, but the author is not known for me.

I think the shadow is too dark, that make you lose some details..

looks pretty good. i think the bricks are a little to shiny. i like the look of the horizontal wood though, cool architectual design.

thumbs up so far...

Great work!

I like this picture. Looking at the wireframe picture I found very interesting, that all the bricks, screws and footbridge pieces are unique (cloned) objects. This explains the long rendering time. :)

The shadows on the ceiling and on the floor are good, but it depends on the monitor you are looking at. I have tried on a low contrast monitor, and yes it seems like it is too dark...

It's a very aesthetic picture! I like that also the left dark wall is illuminated a little bit by the other wall, and that the contours of the shadows are fading out by degrees.

I think your right about the contrast- slightly too high. But overall the image is really good- nice shadows and composition. Good job!

Thank you for the coments!

Robinpower: Just try to watch the pict with a high contrast monitor! You'll see the details behind the dark shadows :)
I agree with the contrast problem.. it might have been better to make the pict brighest.

Delerium: here is some detail picts about the stairs, lamps and a work-in-progress image about the background houses:

Nice detail pics. But on the pic with the lamp, the bricks and the wood planks are so flat, and shiny. Bump or detail map would be a great upgrade...

Yes, you're right, but these r former picts.. now there is a bump on the wood blanks..

I've detected an other error in my pict... it's a compositioning mistake: the vertical posts of the chair are at the same line where the shadows of the vertical wood decorations are on the wall behing the chair. It would have been better to use a different view, or put the camera slightly left or right...

Nice picture, good atmosphere!

I think the scene needs some dirt, but it's good as it is.

I think this scene don't need dirt, or maximum a bit...but I've no time and inspiration for me to make that :)

But I like the dirty scenes, so I've begun a new one,
here is my WIP forum about a dirty factory corridor: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=2931826#post2931826
anyway, thx for you post!!
