Title: Monkeywrench
Name: Eliot Alexander
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Ahh, my first post on CGtalk...I'm getting all tingly, haha....enjoy :D

This is a piece that I've been chipping away at, off and on over the last two months or so. Mostly done in Painter IX, with bits and pieces in Photoshop. I have a tendency to overthink my work, (not always a bad thing), and sometimes this detracts from the enjoyment of actually working on it. So I decided that this picture would be purely for the fun of it. The girl is from a random sketch I did a few months ago, she's obviously built a dragon out of the junk in the background....that's as far as the story goes, haha. I was kind of going for a comic-book-cover sort of look.

I'm still relatively new to digital painting, so aside from having fun I wanted to spend this time learning as much as I could about it. Creating a workflow, playing with brushes, using different media in painter....this was a massive educational experience. I also wanted to focus on creating a solid composition and convey some decent lighting. Some success, some failure. that's the way it goes...

any and all critiques welcome!!

I think you have the "overwork" just right ... i am glad you didnt overthink too much.

I reckon that anymore detail that what you have here would only serve to detract from a character.
Nice characters

I love it! Great style and so many wonderful little details! Nice composition too. Looks more like a mechanically contrived snake than a dragon but looks great either way. Maybe needs arms or wings to give it a dragon feel? Keep up the great work.

Your style reminds me of the Gorillaz somehow...and I understand what you're saying about "overthinking my work"...that's my habit too...
I looooooooooooooooooooove your tiny bits of conceivable detail in this work...necessary and precise...
I love your style esemiel

I really like it. Great style and really nice polish and detail.

I think that there could be more perspective on the dragon’s body to add depth.

Great Work!

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions and kind words :D.

-PixelPlay: "Looks more like a mechanically contrived snake than a dragon but looks great either way. Maybe needs arms or wings to give it a dragon feel?"

re: I tried arms and/or wings, but they made him look a little too generic for my taste. I wanted the head to be the focus on him and those things took away from it, but I agree because of that he was sort of demoted from 'dragon' to 'serpent'. :)

-roaring23: "I think that there could be more perspective on the dragon’s body to add depth."

re: I totally agree. Especially at the bottom...~_~. Live and learn.

-Steampunk: "can I see the sketch ?"

re: here's a link to the evolution of the girl starting with the original pencil sketch and ending with the final version. At first she was much more exotic looking, with heavy makeup and an impractical outfit. I never really intended her to wear that forever, but I didnt want her to get cold while I decided what she was going to look like, :D. Once I decided on a setting, she started to change to suit the more industrial look of the rest of the picture.

Thanks again everbody :)

esemiel, i like your style a lot and i think it comes very close to looking like a comic book cover.

congratulations!

i have only 2 questions for you:

What is the full resolution you were working in?
And how do you get your linework so clean?

Thanks!

esemiel
10-14-2005, 12:25 PM
hrmm... well, I thought I was working in 72dpi but apparantly it's at 150 instead. The final image wasn't terribly big, about 1600x2200. As soon as I get my website up I'll post the full resolution image >_<.

I used the "Fine Tip" brush in the Felt Pens menu,(in Painter), it works great. The lines have a softness to them which leaves room for erasing without looking obvious, and most other messiness is covered up during painting. The lineart for this took way too long, but basically I just sketched out a rough on one layer, then turned down the opacity on it and drew the final lines on a new layer, (or a few layers I later combined in photoshop).

Hi,

I really enjoy your image. It is fun and the color pallete is spot on! My only crit would be the 4 cables in the upper third, compositionaly speaking to me they draw my eyes up and out of the picture. The cables take my attention away from your subjects. That is my only crit.

Great work, I look forward to your future posts.

As everybody has said the style is Fabulous. It definitely is your greatest strength. One thing bothers my. The way the girl is twirling the dragon’s tongue. It looks very stale and forced. You should have her caressing his head. Make that touch/relationship seem natural and the whole image will become believable and alive. I don’t usually put this much thought into a critic but I just love your style so much.

Keep on keeping on :buttrock:

I don't know...I always viewed it like she just conquered the beast by grabbing it's toungue and even though she is much smaller she was able to subdue it by fighting intelligently rather then a affectionate pet sort of view like you are talking about.

But anyways I absolutely love this picture. It really inspires me to go out and practice some more to develope my style :D

Thumbs up for community support!

Thanks everyone.

My email was busted for a while so I didn't even get the message that this thing won a choice award. I happened to discover it when I saw that people had started commenting again and there was the trophy chillin' under my reply on page two...you can imagine my reaction, (there was jumping and flailing involved).

Book-"Do you have a website?"

re: soooon, I swear. before christmas.

ckworrell-"One thing bothers my. The way the girl is twirling the dragon’s tongue. It looks very stale and forced"

re: yeah, that little bit always bothered me too. I think it has to do with the flawed perspective. The tongue says the dragon's head is at one depth, but the rest of the picture says otherwise. I was just being stubborn and didn't want to take out the tongue grab cause I liked the idea.

tmcbroome- "My only crit would be the 4 cables in the upper third, compositionaly speaking to me they draw my eyes up and out of the picture. The cables take my attention away from your subjects."

re: At first they were curtains, just a way to frame up the characters, but when I started adding all the junk on the floor I decided to change it. I still like them, but i get what youre saying. I think it might have to do with the size of them. They are solid blocks of color so it grabs your attention.

Thanks again for all the helpful critiques! keep em' comin'
