That is some outstanding work there I have to say. Even though the piece is in French which I don't happen to know, I could easily appreciate the visual aspect of the piece. Great work there I must say!

If you are still looking for hosting, drop me a PM, I may be able to host this for you or mirror it for you possibly.

how long did you take to make this short ? when did you do it ?

Thanks a lot guys!

We made it in supinfocom arles in south of france, during the 2 years of 3d studies... 1 to learn 3dsMax, making a short film (30 sec, mine is "renaissance", see it on my website) and begin the synopsis and storyboard of the short film. During the 2nde year (october to july) we made the film. First, the 3d animatic, based on the 2d animatic, second part, modelling, then skinning, animating, lighting, rendering, postproduction, sound and assembly all with premiere...

After, we show it in a cinema, for a jury (pros and professors)...
and then, we search jobs and show the film in festivals like annecy, imagina... etc.

This is a beautiful short film, and quite an undertaking. I like the pace and story behind the film a lot, and the rendering/lighting/textures are gorgeous. The shots are framed very nicely.

My french is pretty rusty but I understood most of what happened from the action. Didn't quite get the particles being released though, was there a reason for that other than to look pretty? I think the only crit I have is at times the wings on the bird look a little awkward. Also the lighting in some shots (particularly the ones where he's going down the canyon/approaching the building) seems a little different from the different angles. Apart from that its a pretty much flawless piece. Congrats!

Didn't quite get the particles being released though, was there a reason for that other than to look pretty?
From what I gather it was to determine the direction of the wind. The bird would follow the wind when released and to find the bird they needed to follow the wind as well. Tossing something in the air to see how it falls, rather than just trying to guess the wind direction (lick the finger type of thing), has the intimate spirituality fitting with the rest of the story.

This is a beautiful piece and very easy to follow, even without knowing the language they are speaking. You don't even need words at all to really understand what is going on, that's the sign of a great film maker.

great movie - quite an undertaking
the animation is pretty decent, the horses work very well.
the only two critx would be the wings animation and the particles (look too much 3D generated)

good luck

Yep, that was really good. I enjoyed watching it even though I don't understand french.
The way the whole animation was put together is what makes it captivating. The camera positions. I liked the animation of the horses, realistic movements.

All very well done.:)

Here's a quick translation of the script. My French is very bad, so forgive any inaccuracies.

It's yours, Naran. His name is Tushig.

Papa, can I let it fly tonight?

No! The wind is blowing.

It's not accustomed to you, to your scent, your voice.

Don't remove its hood!

We'll go together onto the hill so that you can tame it.

[...]
There, gently, Tushig!

[...]
Papa...

Don't worry, we'll go search for it tomorrow

[...]
Naran, wait!

It's time for you to go the rest of the road.

Alone? But..

Continue following the wind!

You will see some ruins..

Go in and don't leave them.

Thank's a lot all, it's good to see that our movie is liked by so many peoples! :)
We will make an english version soon for the web.
I put the name of the characters in the script (Tx Lupinus):

Aman (the father) : It's yours, Naran. His name is Tushig.

Naran (the Child) : Papa, can I let it fly tonight?

Aman : No! The wind is blowing. It's not accustomed to you, to your scent, your voice.
Don't remove its hood! We'll go together onto the hill so that you can tame it...

[...]
Naran: There, gently, Tushig!

[...]
Naran: Papa...

Aman : Don't worry, we'll go search for it tomorrow

[...]
Aman : Naran, wait! It's time for you to go the rest of the road.

Naran: Alone? But..

Aman : Continue following the wind! You will see some ruins... Go in and don't leave them.

yeah, we had some dissensions on the character design, specially on the child... so it's not as we wanted but it's normal, in a collective project we can't be always agree.

Very nice work, though the mirror only gave me about 1/2 of the film.

My only critique would be on the sound. There's a lot of background noise in your sound effects and I found the use of a blue jay's squawk for the bird to be really distracting. It's such an immediately recognizable bird call that nobody would ever confuse it for a hawk or eagle's call.

But that's getting pretty picky.

Visually it's really very nice.

I saw this awhile ago, I can't remember where it was...it didn't have english subtitles so I didnt understand some of it.
Nonetheless...I loved how it looked, and the animation was great :) especially the bird. but I love birds.

Brent_3D:
thx a lot! it's cool to have such good feedback especially from a great cg artist!

feebsicle:
thx a lot miss :) for the bird it's especially the work of ben for the modelling, texturing, (and animating on the scene of the tree), he did a great job on the bird! Noella make the animation of the bird on the first scenes, and i took the work of my too colleague to make the scene of the canyon, so, i edit the textures and the modelisation from ben and the animated cycle of the bird to add chaos and create the dark birds...
It's a very good idea to make an exchange program between our 2 schools ! I'm no longuer in supinfocom, but you can find some informations on the 2 websites of the school : www.supinfocom.fr (http://www.supinfocom.fr) (official one) and www.supinfocom.org (http://www.supinfocom.org) (student one), the second has a forum included.
I hope you can come in france because the school is great, specially in arles (i don't know well the valenciennes school). if you want we can chat about it on MSN. :)

Drakaran:
i'm happy that you can saw it, and thx a lot for your comment :) (i hope that i will have time to make an english version soon)

Aie! While paulrus saw at least 1/2 of the film...I got 1/4 of it! The part where the boy just realized that the hawk ain't coming back...

But overall nice...I see that you guys were going for realism...well executed.

The only little crits from me is that blackness on the screen. I understand the use of the first one when the boy took the cloth from off the hawk...but I see another black out...and that didn't make any sense...it looked like a screen error or something. Besides that the animation is swell.:)

Looking forward to seeing more of it, hopefully.

PO-8

yeah you're totally right, this black screen is a mistake on the renderer when we had exported the movie for the web. i put the film again on the website, encoded with the flashplayer 8, it seems to work good, there is also 2 mirrors so i hope you will see it soon.
