The bug that makes reaction manager useless for merging characters in version 7 still seems to be present in the Service Pack update.

Is there any fix at all for this without upgrading?

The only available fix is through the service pack, which is free.

hmmmm, well I have the service pack and it is still buggy - can't merge

i think that you can merge your scene, with reaction manager constrains with other scenes, as long as they don't have any parameter set too; you can't export them. at least, it works for me...
