Squibbit 10-09-2005, 02:59 PM Hi peoples, decide to make a thread where i could hopefully get some
opinions on my artwork, do drop by with a comment or two every now and then :)
Here is the first piece, made it this morning, took about 4,5 hours to paint.
the stuff on the bridge are a tiny pair of shoes and a lollipop, but it isn't that
clear , really, dunno what to do about that except for changing the image
resolution, i made it in this size.
I also played with the idea of replacing the shoes and the lollipop with a
kid dragging behind a leash, not yet having noticed the dog attached to
the other end having disappeared.
any comments?

hie squibbit~thats quite a nice painting u got here~i like the tree colors as well as the river as it looks like kinda thick and condensed.however,i think the angle seems alil linear and centralised, the overall feel is good, very interesting creature design though.keep it up mate~:)

Really nice so far. The mossy, weathered wood looks amazing. I thought the water was pavement, though. Most streams would look a dark brown color with off-white reflections. The orange of the grass throws me, too.
Kid with an empty leash sounds like a good idea.

10-09-2005, 07:46 PM
thanks, you're both right
yea i gotta learn to render water better, too many times it gets mistaken
for pavement, hehe
ah well, how's this then?
http://www.saunalahti.fi/panuom/BridgeMunster_2.jpg
Nice painting there Sir Squibs. I love the colors of the bush/trees. The water is definitely rendered better in the second pic. Good job.

Thanks!
And Lady Madalaine, one does not go saying to gentlemen "I want your brain"
anymore than one asks a Lady her age , tsk tsk .. ah well, another crazy witch
stalking in the bushes behind the house and the week's barely an hour old..
yea personally I liked the first pic more, cause the air felt colder and the atmoshpere
more autumn-like. Also, the monster had a spookier feel to it, while the one in the
second pic was more bug-like.
I tried to redo the grass in the first pic, ended up looking a bit sad. the water looks
better to me though, agreed? Another f-up was the mighty badly rendered powerline,
which felt like a nice idea at first.. gonna keep it i think, if i manage to make it better.
And finally there's the little girl, whose dragging the suddenly so light a leash.
No more time to work on this today, another day someone stole hours from...

I like the first one better, but I like the pylon in the second one because it adds to the perspective.
Overchord
10-10-2005, 01:32 PM
I like your first one better without the girl. There's more "power of suggestion" in it :) Plus the pylon in the background kinda make the picture more "modern" or time-specific. Without the pylon it could be any time since man has built bridges and chldren have had lollipop
(well must be off now to look up the history of the lollipop.... :lightbulb )
Perhaps, to make it a bit clearer, replace the lollipop with a doll or sumthin?
Great work

O_o now I'm nervous about walking over that bridge on the way home. Cool stuff, hehe, as always. I like the orange vines in the first version better by themselves, but I think it adds more variety to the picture when they're green.
I like the water actually, but I think that what it is is the fact that it's generally smooth with very fine ripples to break it up - maybe if you distored it more and added some shine? Especially round the edges. I love the wall under the bridge with the pond scum, great colours there. Favourite thing is the trees...ack they're so orange and fluffy...and the pics better without the girl.
Keep on rocking there Squib :P

Wow, that first pic mate me flinch, as i only saw the top part, until the end of the bridge, and then when i scrolled down i saw the monkey thing.

ok, then, u silly sprite, I mailed u a thumb-sized brain piece, but dat's
all u gonna get. I hope it grows back i feel dumber than ever now. Thanks.
Oh yea the cocroach in the package i sent is to carry the brain piece
into your head and put it in place. You just let it crawl in your nose, it
finds its way from there and remember to tie a string on one of its legs,
so u ca pull the bug out when it's done.

Overchord - thanks for comments , good thinking with the doll idea and
yea the "power of suggestion" thingy adds to the spookiness.
Elsie - no reason to be nervous walking home, just take the walk with
Madalaine here and when u see some long, dark fingers approaching, just
push her to the beast and run
and i agree with you about the grass and the water, thanks
mr.loco - good to hear to have caused such a reaction, many thanks

Egads Squib, I don't know what is more frightening your painting or the package for Madalaine. EEEEKKKK cockroaches.
I thought that the first painting was great! The orange grass looks perfectly normal to us Californians. In the summer time we see orange grass every evening around sunset when all the hills light up with golden sunshine. The dry straw colored grass gets a definate glow.;)

I like the idea of the leash better - I think it has more potential for suspense and humour. I would work on the girls body language, making it clear that (for example)
- she has not yet realized her darling pet has been devoured
- she has realized that her darling pet has been devoured
- she is horrified (she loves her little dog)
- shes kind of happy (shes tired of taking it for walks)
- shes excited (she likes eating big scarey spiders)

Neat stuff, Squibbit! Like I've already mentioned your painting skills are quite a lot developed in a short time. :) I Like the latest painting a lot. Very nice mood and composition. The only thing I would perhaps to change is the too linear cloud structure. It makes eye go too easily on the left side of the pic. Anyway that isn't too disturbing.. Keep up the good work!

Squibbit, the werewolf piece is amazing, especially the strong use of compliment colors. Another high note, is that you were able to convey, successfully, a night scene using a green palette instead of blues and lavenders which would be the typical choice. In any case, the outcome has this weird psychotic tension...great job!

Thats like another scary piece. I keep wondering where its been? what its been up to? whose blood is that? Good job on th e colors. I like the reflection in the water.
You are in a real halloween mood aint ya?
Gord-MacDonald
10-16-2005, 08:15 AM
IMO - the town and castle should be higher up - like maybe the eye level of the werewolf - everything else is a1!. The blood is a gorgeous rich red -( esp. when viewed by a full moon :D ).
Good work!

The water looks good in this one squib! I'm not sure about how the blood is though - would it not spread out under the water a bit, rather than being in a rather strict line?
Werewolf looks awesome...ah so fluffy...can I pet him? I like the light in the distance too, really adds to the composition.
multiVitamin
10-16-2005, 11:33 AM
Yeah I have to agree with Elsie's point about the blood, I think it would look somewhat like i red colored cloud under water, especially where thick drops of blood tripped into the water. like your sky (which I love btw ;) ), just turned upside down :D
great work!
Squibbit
10-16-2005, 11:44 AM
Yeah, i dunno what i was thinking with the blood there, just being artistic
i guess, haha

Really nice squib, stop being so self critical! *slaps squibbit with a wet trout*.
This is a very cool piece - I love the background colour. I think that really gives so much of a flair to it. I don't think you should shinefy the snake - it'll spread the eye out too much when looking at the piece. It's nice to have a texture contrast beween the metal and the snake.
The snakes eyes are good, the whole face just has something very "squibbit" about it. Haha, don't take that the wrong way, it's good. I also like the stringy-smoky stuff coming out of the glowing ball.

Nice work, squib, especially on that last one, a really unusual image from that perspective. Took me a moment to realise the edges of her dress are where the white bits of lace.. at first I though she was stuck in some kind of void (your armpit hair perhaps? *grin*). I really love the movement of the curtain with her though, lovely touch. Where will you take us next squib?

another one that started on a lunchbreak.. i call this Fearie Tragedy, cause the
pic on the left is what i got in a little over an hour and it was the type of pic i wanted
to make. Instead, I spent hours working on the pic, chnaging this and that , not really
getting anywhere , and ending up with the pic on the right... sort of sacrifing feeling to
flashiness.
It's no that bad , but not what I aimed for , thinkin about going back to the early version
and give it another try ... maybe finish both? :P
Any ideas ?

I like the first one better too, even though it is rougher.
It has somehow more personality as where the second one looks really lovely but like a normal generic fairy painting.
The skin color looks a bit flat at the moment. Mix some of those fancy background colors into her hair and skin. Make the skin color more saturated where it casts shadow in itself.
The definition of the chest/shoulder area on the second one is better.
Maybe mix the two together somehow? :)

11-10-2005, 09:59 AM
I totally agree with Kyena, you are indeed a source of inspiration ;-)
I really enjoyed seeing all your sketches in this thread. You got great style!!!
what about feeling the flashiness? XD it could work!
But I also agree with Kyena on this, I do like the first one more, it has more freedom of hand and more feeling. (And the lips look better that size) hehehee

Nice to see some new work Squib, I'm gonna go with the flow and agree that the first one is nicer - it may just be that the colours on my monitor are totally messed up but the skin looks a little too saturated to me.
I think you should go back to the first one and work from there, but keep the hair from the second one because it's lovely. I like how the background colours work too.

the matte is awesome Squib - I always wonder how you guys do those..really cool idea and realization.
The face a bit further up: she is lovely but for the snow/cold background her skin needs more of the cooler shades from the bg and I want her ear puffs! (or whatever they are called..)
And damn that piraty thingie with the teddies - that rocks around the clock haha :D

I like the first one better too, even though it is rougher.
It has somehow more personality as where the second one looks really lovely but like a normal generic fairy painting.
I agree. The only thing I would say is maybe transpose the finished hair on the earlier face or something. Though I think the size of the hair is part of it. The slimmer hair on the first one might work better. But definitely the earlier one has more character, especially the eyes for some reason.

started as a lunchtime scribbleration again and continued after work,
this one was inspired by the other zombie stuff in the 2D WIP forum
yes , this one has a story to it, too :p, goes like this:
Honored Dr.Hauer is also Reverend Hauer. He finds zombies,
holds up his glowing cross-adorned staff and raises his other
hand palm up towards the creatures and speaks the god's words,
expelling the evil from zombies.
This truly happens because hidden in the sleeve of his other hand
is a twin barreled dart gun, one of the barrels shooting lethal acid
and poison darts , while the other shooting darts containing a
special serum that returns zombies to normal people, with the side
effects of retaining much of their zombie-like skin tones and being
made obedient servants of the Reverend.
Hauer roams around , followed by a bunch of beautiful women with
strange skin color for company and strong men as bodyguards ,
leaving behind a trail of corpses.
sometimes the glowing staff grows dimmer and Hauer knows the
powers god has given him are weakened and he must pray to
regain strentgh from god. This means either the staff informs him
his needle supply is running low or that the staff itself is running
out of batteries and needs recharging.

That dude is massive. You have conveyed his commanding presence. Although I can't make up my mind if he is a good guy or a bad guy. :P

i cant draw well at all with pencil (perspective problem for me especially if i draw with the piece of paper on flat tabletop)

i cant draw well at all with pencil (perspective problem for me especially if i draw with the piece of paper on flat tabletop)
haha , yea I have the same. I used to lie down on my bed while drawing, or sitting
hunched over the paper, you see, my head tilted to the side a bit and my face real
close to the paper, so everything i drew got some real weird perspective distortions.
Using wacom I've learned so draw sitting up, back straight, heh, and it helped with
this picture, too.

this still looks to me like you're setting up the scene and adding more stuff later
the design on the dress is gorgeous, the background is intriguing, tho might need more ambience perhaps, and the composition looks like it's going to be a humor piece (which was why i thought a pig would be really cute at her side lol)

add a little fish eye perspective, that it could look funny,

Figure looking great...I love her dress....and the pattern on it....Very Queen Amidala-like.
The background building can use a little more contrast especially the obelisk with one side lit and the other in shadow...so the form of it is more define...unless you want them to be just sillhouette...
The dome is i think is too close to the edge of the roof level. I know its hard to shade a convincing dome :D. Great courage to brave that tho Panu!

what in the compositon makes you think it is a humour piece?
i think it's the ratio between the girl and the background.. usually something that looms right up to the "camera" and towering almost over the background is either menacing or amusing (to me anyways), and the appearance of the girl in a non-menacing pose sorta suggests humor.. at least, that's my point of view on this :)

so is your sketch!:buttrock: i third the suggestion to make it a finished piece, the composition is really cool

sometimes it helps to paint a skeleton over the character to see the proportions
better and stuff... how does it look now ? (in my eyes it's not badly off)

Squib,
Your batman piece looks great! I actually like your initial sketch best ... maybe you can darken batman slightly and just add a few subtle highlights on the cape? Great use of color by the way.

Hey Squib!
Beautiful job on the Batman pic and I LOVE those dwarves. Of course, I've always been partial to dwarves cause they are so funny and cute...and apparently have good ale too. :D
Any plans to do more with the dwarves? Colour I mean...heh heh.
Also noticed that at some point a couple of the flanking dwarves must have discovered storm trooper technology and abandoned their axes. Sweet!
Cheers!
