Does maya have any sort of way that I can control poly/edge/vertex weights when I model stuff using sub-division surfaces? So I can control the hardness of edges and things like that.

3DSMax has this feature and so does cinema4d (which has a nice video on their website demonstrating what im trying to say Example (http://www.maxon.net/pages/products/c4d/movie_modeling.html) )

Its pretty hard to explain but I hope that video shows you what Im trying to say. If it's not built in by default.. is there any scripts which could do that (probably not :D )

The only other that I know of on how to achieve that effect would be to just keep adding polygons to the edges I want to become harder and I don't think thats a great solution for everything.

Id like to see what the wireframe of that plug looked like. Maya has Full crease, Partial creas and Uncrease. If you select your Sub-D edges and go to Partial crease it will start that weight, if you need it to get sharper just apply it as many times untill it looks good. If you want a hard edge use Full crease. If at any time you want to remove the crease go to Uncrease.

nope.. maya has no such feature.. unfortunately, because that c4d video looks really cool :hmm:

the full and partial crease is a "workaround" for that, but it is really slow and you have only very few control - compared to the weighting like in c4d

Just have to work normaly with polys then:scream:

Yes thats a really cool feature. But as far as I know. You just have to add the edges to get the def. you need.
Too bad, I guess. But Im used to it.

you dont really have to.. just insert another row of edges like dmc suggested.. that brings up poly count but still works.
but unfortunately not that editable :)
