Sadly, this won't be a 5 page posting bonanza.

I wished I used Houdini more for my own personal projects.

peace,

Excellent. Might have to drive up to LA for those presentations.

Of interesting note, there is an x86 64-bit build for Debian up there. I imagine enterprising minds will be able to get that running on other 64-bit distros as well.

...sorry; that was just part of a run-on joke. ;)

But the free version is very much worth the download - and you may as well give it a whirl! It weighs in a very managable 100mb for the entire application.

Finally a complete manual with example setups for hundreds of nodes. Learning Houdini at home should be easy now. No more PDF docs!

Congrats Side Effects! Can't wait to dive into DOPS.

Yeah, those examples are incredibly useful - especially for hints for the advanced usage of all the operators.

Sorry Ken, I'm a bit confused. Do you mean that SideFX has printed up a physical manual or that they've ditched the PDF manual for HTML docs?

I am looking forward to this. I've found Houdini to be a bit badly documented for the newcomers, I'll definately give it a test drive...

...When I'm back on a computer that can handle it.

You'll find the examples of all the HelpCards extraordinarily useful then.

You may as well try Houdini on your current machine. OpenGL drivers are so much better these days and many consumer-level cards with the latest drivers do an acceptable job.

I am pretty sure you will love the new help card .. ..one advice from novice user.. Don't expect to master the software in a week.Learning houdini is not about how to use the software .. but to understand the underlaying of 3d and how the differnet nodes connect each other to build what you call complex stuff in cg.
To speed up the workflow.. you might also want to assign the hotkeys so that you don't have to press TAB key everytimes you create new nodes.
Good luck and be sure to check out www.sidefx.com and www.odforce.net forum.

I'd second this as well, as at the official release of Houdini 8 at Framestore CFC the head of R&D showed us some of what it can do on a really outdated laptop. Still ran fairly well considering.

There is a new Dynamics Quickstart tutorial at www.sidefx.com. Go to Learning>Tutorials where you can get the new lesson and its supporting files. In this lesson, you will explore Houdini's dynamics environment including the rigid body and cloth solvers. You will also learn about rigid body glue and how to work with both solvers in the same simulation.

This online lesson is in PDF format (they are back.....) to make it easy to print and use for self-study learning. These web-based lessons are in addition to the material that ships with Houdini.

This is the first of a series of lessons planned for the web. As time passes, the best of these lessons will be included as part of the html based documentation.
