View Full Version : Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Leonard 11-12-2002, 09:47 AM Hi guys,
I recently spoke with some of the folks at Production I.G about the use of 3D and CGI in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - the new TV series based on the movie.
This is just a short article, but I know some of you are as big anime fans as I, so here goes:

just saw GITS:SAC episode 3, very elliptic script and no action, they are keeping in tone with the orignal movie. What s sweet is they changed the intro clip with a full CG movie, the editing and transition's are great.
Nevermore

Hmmm really hoping they'll air it here in the Netherlands, too.. we're probably in for quite a wait, but my guess is it'll probably be worth it :applause: :D

the chance for them to have english subtitles are very slim though.

OMG! the CG in the opening for episode 3 was really amazing. Not as crisp as Final Fantasy, but sleek enough for a TV show. I hope Episode 4 uses CG Again.
The new Gundam series, Gundam Seed also uses really nice toon renders, if anyone gets a change to see that as well.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is currently only showing on the Sky PerfecTV satellite TV channel (http://www.skyperfectv.co.jp/anime/) (the URL is Japanese text only). I don't think Sky PerfecTV is available outside of Japan, so it looks like the rest of us will have to wait until Bandai Entertainment arranges broadcast rights. Cartoon Network did informally mention GitS: SAC at ComiCon International back in August, but I've yet to see the series listed on Cartoon Network's schedule from now to January.
Production IG is taking its time producing this series. Dwight Hwang recently mentioned seeing the completed seventh episode (so all 26 episodes are not done yet), and Sky PerfecTV is only broadcasting two episodes per month. I suspect that Cartoon Network will not put GitS: SAC on its schedule until all the episodes are completed and dubbed, which puts the broadcast date in the US sometime in summer of 2003 at the earliest. :annoyed:

The best place at the moment is this one (http://www.production-ig.co.jp/anime/gits3/design05.html) from Production IG's Japanese site. (http://www.production-ig.co.jp) It has a few more design sketches than the ones available from the English site. (http://www.productionig.com/)
This reminds me of a picture (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/Images/img_d10_fuchikoma_cam2_ghost_GI_dof_finale.jpg) from the Brazil R/S gallery (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/sf_gen_page.php3?page=page3). Hmm?
Oh and *COUGH* you can thank me later..
320 (http://www.osysi.net/files/GhostintheShell_SAC_Intro_320.avi) ~5mb
640 (http://www.osysi.net/files/GhostintheShell_SAC_Intro_640.avi) ~10mb
divX5 required (http://home.osysi.net/divx/)
notes: Run divX installers in order. Do not allow anything after 3.11 alpha overwrite any previous installers' settings. Newer "upgraded" versions have been tested to be slower.
I watched this frame by frame at least 5 times now, and I thought I would share the love with whoever has already brought up the article on 3D Fest. Enjoy...
Also, let me make this absolutely clear that this is just the intro that I have posted for analysis and discussion by the cgtalk group. These files are nowhere near the true quality of the original -- which is stunning!! Go buy the series on DVD! Oh, and Leonard, just say the word and I will take these files down faster than you can say sausage.
