i know that instancing helps make file size small, but can it also help redraw speed? i am thinking not, but thought i should ask anyhow.

thanks

only if you turn the viewport render dot off. unfortuantely if you have detail in viewports it's always going to slow down (graphics cards can only push so many polygons).

but is it faster than if the object was not instanced, and you turn the editor view dot off? my thinking is it's still probably the same...

why not try it?

Same or slower if instanced because an instance has to be generated.

For my experience it's slower. Instances, symmetry, and array. Just a few won't show a difference. But try making an instance of an array of a symmetry of an instance group. Gets slow fast. (of course that spend up the time it would have taken to replace all those objects when the client changed the type of chair they had) That same nested generated group is a lot smooth if all the intances/array/symmetry are made editable to their polygon state big time. Depend on what you are working on as to what to go with :)
