i am tring to model in the demo version of softimage xsi 5.0 and I can't find the extrude tools. Are there tutorials for v 5.0 already?

they are where they were before.
duplicating polygons, right clicking (or alt+right clicking, depending from your interaction mode) and using extrude along normal or extrude along curve and all that.
all these tools are also in the modelling panel on the left obviously.

thank you. So pretty much the the only thing that makes it more like maya's interface ("easy migration from maya") is the way the camera can be manipulated via alt and the mouse? I am currently learning maya 7.0 in school and am evaluating softimage as well to figure out which app is better for me for my senior thesis next year. Gator seems to be calling, I like the idea of only setting up one face rig and transferring it to other models with one click. :applause:

the maya migration tools are Keyboard mapping, interface layout, and a couple of behaviours in the interface changed. Obviously soft didn't rewrite the whole software to act like maya, luckily so for the modelling part of it I'd say, they simply gave it a friendlier interaction mode to easer maya users' transition.
Don't try to force XSI into behaving like if you'd be using maya, that's a huge mistake and would cripple XSI to near useless, use it the way it works best if you want to find out whatever you like it or not.

so i should it to softimage 3d or softimage xsi layout? how do I do this?

use the maya layout if you're comfortable with it.
what I'm saying is that you shouldn't try and look EXACTLY for the same tools and behaviours maya has, but rather learn how things work in XSI (IE: the operators stack, the totally modal PPGs etc.)

i just saw a post about this amazing scuptlor who in 2 months created a ultra detailed model in softimage. he said he formed it from a box and sculpted it like clay. how do you sculpt a box like digital clay, does xsi have simliar tools that zbrush has?

Yes it's called Num +/- for the SubD and proportional modeling ;) It's the next best thing to Zbrush, and even better than Silo imho. I learnt XSI in a couple days last week and I've already build a realistic model very quickly and effortlessly thanks to the intuitive tools and workflow. Frankly I love the software :)

resistance is futile, glad you didn't even try to put any up :P

how did you learn it so quickly, did you study from tutorials? you didn't happen to make a tutorial yourself now eh? ;-) he he.

Sotimage gave away a set of learing DVD's when Foundation 4 was first sold at $495.

You can still buy them at Softimage or go purchase learning tools from places like http://www.3dtutorial.com/

No tuts, but I have extensive knowledge in maya and an overall general knowledge of 3D softs that comes with experience. Best advice I can give you is start a project in XSI and go at it. It's how I learnt it so quickly, because you begin to ask the right questions when you want to accomplish a task.

And Jaco, I know, I know :deal:

I am not getting the proportional modelliing to work from pressing num +/- ( in either 5.0 foundation demo or the mod tool) I have several years of experience with blender, so I am not totally out of the loop. One thing in blender that I really love is that you can select a point with the right mouse button and than you can quickly manipulate that. and you can also extrude a service by pressing "e" can something similiar be done in xsi?

Sorry I worded that weird, you use num +/- to choose your subD level, then you select proportional modeling by select the "prop" button under the transform menu to the right. Select your verts/edge e.t.c and go at it, if you have a scroll mouse you can use the wheel to adjust the falloff (very interactive) also try the tweak tool, it's a blast ;)

Have fun

Read the modeling section in the tutorial manual.

Read the modeling section in the tutorial manual.
Read the modeling section in the tutorial manual.
Read the modeling section in the tutorial manual.

There's a chapter in the tutorial manual which covers many, many different operations related to modeling.

Read it.

Also, I like to add, dont forget to try the new tweak tool, shorcut "m"on the keyboard.

the modeling section in the tutorials does not cover xsi 5.0 so using the tweak tool or the qwerty setup is not covered. I do not know how to switch to the native xsi keyboard setup.

I read that the help has a "what's new" chapter that explains the m tool and other stuff.

Womball i think you need to read a little more and make some tutorials.

Ooh thanks a lot for that one! Figures it would be a simple thing.

Perhaps not, but it covers the Extrude tool.
