Hi all,

I'm trying to add animation controlers to an JSF Lockheed Martin X-35 engine noozzle. I don't know what method I should use.

First I tried adding slider controlers but I couldt set them to work because the segments rotate in their local axis and sliders didt't work well with that, they only rotate the segments in the view axis. Is there a way to do this with sliders??.

I also tried to apply Ik and limit rotation, but it didnt work well too (sure i didn't know how to do this).

Help PleASE!!! any tips???.

Here is a sample file in max 6 (http://www.arte-3d.com/cgtalk/engine02.zip) file option A needs to be like option B
Small avi scene setting only keys (http://www.arte-3d.com/cgtalk/scene.avi)

Thanks a lot,

Morpher modifier. Echale un vistazo a la ayuda. Usa un target en 30% y otro en 60% y
el final en 100% para evitar un movimiento lineal y forzar algo más curvo.

Morpher modifier. Take a look to the help. Use progressive morphing with targets in
30%, 60% and 100% to get a curving movement.

You should be able to rig it with some bones and use the reaction controller

Bao: Thanks for your tips but I've tried that too, it works but doesn't look too realistic. Gracias!

Ninjas: Could you tell me more... haven't tried that.

Thanks guys

go Character->Bone tools. Hit create bone and make a chain 3 long (with a cap on one end, so four actually)
Throw the skin modifier on you mesh, add your bones to it and hit the 'select vertex' checkbox to check it.
hit edit envelope and select the first bone. Select the vertecies in the first section and go down to 'vertex wieght' and enter '1'
Now you should be able to get out of that, select bone 1 and move it to move your mesh.

This is a vastly simplfied version of what you will need to do to make it do exactly what you want but should get you going in the right direction.

Ninjas: First off all thanks. I added bones as you seggested me, but i'm not able to use local axis to rotate the ducts the way I want, and it seems more organic than mechanic.

Here is the max file (http://www.arte-3d.com/cgtalk/engine03.zip)

not fun. Play the animation up to 50. Some key frame, some reaction controller. Not perfect, but my best attempt.

man, I don't know what the deal is. It wont save the file on my web browser. It will probably work if you save target and put a .max extension.

maybe trying it with some bend modifier ? like this on the attach zip
it was made with max 7

hope that helps

Hi all,

Thanks for your help guys...

Ninjas: This is very interesting, I need to learn reactor, can you recomend me other reactor tutorials. This aproaches a lot to what I need, only two more questions:
1. I suppose you animated each state the way you wanted with the reaction manager with masters and slaves of course?
2. Can this be manipulated later with slider controllers, so that anyone can animate this just by moving a slider?

Artisanfx: Yes that works, but what I need is to simulate the real thing. Thanks any way.

Hello,

I think you're all getting a little too complicated! this is a pretty straightforward mechanical animation.

First of all the pipes aren't circular in profile, they're elliptical.

Secondly, all that is needed is a couple of dummies and an animated rotation in one axis.

I've created the elliptical profile by drawing a circle in the top viewport, and then rotating 22.5 degrees in the X or Y axis. I've then reset the transform by creating another shape in the top viewport and adding the original circle to it, and then deleting the second spline. Now when I add an extrude modifier, it extrudes with the correct elliptical profile.

I've then added an Emesh modifier, and rotated the vertices at one end 45 degrees.

Then I've duplicated the object twice, and rotated the middle one 180 degrees around the Z axis

Now I create three dummies at the top of each object. Each dummy is rotated to match the end cap faces of the tubes.

Each object is linked to the dummy at it's highest end, and the dummies are linked to each other from the top down.

Now I animate the two lower dummies to rotate 180 degrees in the Y axis and viola, there you are.

You could link these dummies using parameter wiring so the always work together if you like.

Please let me know if I've mis-understood!

Cheers,

The reaction controller is very cool. I learned it from the max 8 tutorial book (which I think is online). I set only two states for that, but you can put more in at 25, 50, and 75, and then it all controlled by the slider. This is the best set up for animating fingers.

Oh. I should mention. There is a big difference between "Reactor" and the "reaction controller" and the similar names make it easy to get mized up.

Hey man, I never got time to reply to your initial queerie - but when it comes time to do the actual variable geometry/thrust vectoring nozzle, give us a shout as I've had a bit of experience with it.

Hi all,

j_man: This is the right solution... yes you did think well, the simplest is the best, your solution is great for what I need, I just need to change the animation a little bit. Btw you are good at geometry, I could'n solve that eliptical problem. Thanks a lot.

Ninjas: Still need to learn more of that. Thanks a lot.

Mynewcat: Sure I'll send you a pm. Thanks.

I'll post some advances later.

Cheers,

Hi again,

This is almost the final way it should look.

JSF_Nozzle Max 7 (http://www.arte-3d.com/cgtalk/JSF_nozzle02.zip)

and here is a pic fo the model
