Hello there
My first challenge and serious contest.
The giant squid isn't just a myth, it is known that these mysterious creatures of the sea do infact exist.
One has come close to the surface. I want to give a dramatic view of the squid, being hit by light coming from above.
An alternative scene (to create some more tension if you will) is to let it fight with a whale, it is known that they become whale food.
This sketch isn't very detailed and the pose of the squid may not be as seen here, but it is just to give you an idea on what I'm aiming for. As you can hear I haven't settled on what exactly to occur in the scene, but it will involve a giant squid that's for sure.

Started basic modeling of the squid.

Cool idea Jesp
Yes, i think you should have it fighting a whale. Perhaps the squid is trying to flee to the surface with a whale draging it down in one of the tentecles? And perhaps some scars and severed tentacles
keep it up!
Something like that yes, you knew what I was thinking there:)

Hello Jelle,
nice modelling so far. This reminds me of the old school books i used to read at my old school years ago. This is a perfect setup for a action packed scene. You can either choose for the squid to encounter a whale or maybe a small fishermens boat, or a large cargo ship of some kind making the squid a huge seamonster...
Iam definitly going to watch this one!...

So started detailing some on this thing. Still need lots of refinements here and there, and a pose will come in the final picture, though it will probably only be the tentacles.

So on to the whale. This will be a spermwhale since they are known for fighting and eating squids.
I'm thinking about adding another one, a killer orca whale, that will be lurking to attack the spermwhale without knowing it. It is known that killer whales attack other whales as well.
I'm not sure about involving a human element of some sort.
c&c welcome.

Started on texturing. This is first a test of shaders, still need to tweak the unwrapping for the head and tentacles alot.
C&C welcome

Thanks for comment :)

Ok done some remodeling and texturing. Spent quite some time with unwrap and painting. Still need eyes and those sucking disc, not to mention further tweaking and painting.
A view at the unwrap map will follow.

As promised the Unwrap map. Far from finished though.

Before I continue on anything else I thought I'd show this basic composition rendering to show the general idea I'm thinking about.

Hey Jesp,
cool looking envoirment, but I still wanna see thoose hooks on the squids sucking discīs. I know you cant wait to play with the lighting, but try to finish you modelling first and then move on. I also dig your textures, now kick some ass...
Cheers...

wow very nice render! I like reflection of water surface! some point i notice is under water , the color seem to be desaturate from frog or debris, maybe you can tone down the yellow of squid , and now caustics is too white and constant ,
the orther is awesome ! good job!

I agree! This looks really good - the lighting and the coloring already gives a good mood to it.
Very nice job - will follow from now
larsgehrt: I know I know:) I already have the image in my head, just wanna skip the boring parts(modeling) and move on to the funny parts. But can't do that of course.
Thanks for comment.
monsitj: Thanks. You're right - I gave the render a bit of colorcorrection, guess I shouldn't have. And you're right about the other things as well, will look into that.
Gunilla: Thank you. Sounds good and thanks for stoppin by.
This will keep me motivated folks:thumbsup:
Pretty awesome lighting so far.. Great concept!

Wow, first time I see this, very cool concept, always wanted to animate this.

Update on composition and lighting.I'm in a composition/lighting phase right now.
Trying a different aspect ratio. Added another squid in foreground so the concept is now the whale is chasing the squid fleeing to the surface, but another one is coming to the rescue, so there's a big battle going on. It's basic just to have more going on in the scene. The whale is badly textured, just so you know:-) I will also add some nice colorfull jellyfish and corals.
Let me know your thoughts on this.
Alright then, I take it I will work further with this.:)

More squids sounds good - I suggest you place one or some beside or right behind the whale - right now it's a bit difficult to see how huge they are.
Lighting is georgeous

Nice render of your scene, poses of the quid look a bit similar, but I assume this is only WIP for now.
Good work:thumbsup:
Gunilla: Yes something like that indeed and thanks.
thierry2005: Thanks. Yes definitely just WIP wil have to pose each squid differently.
Now that I have my precious light setup, I can continue on such things.

hmmmmm
There's a couple of things i miss,..
The whale tail and fin and some squid detail.
but one thing is that if the both the squids and the wale are huge you will need something in the sceen that have i size known to most people to compare with, ..
if you know hvat i meen,..
they just seem so small.
3d-empire: You have a point on the size matter, any suggestions?
But then again most people know that whales are large animals, so it's more the size of squid that you need to pay attention to.
You are right about the finne and tail of course, wil come on next update.
