First time posting.
This has been a 2d image that's been with me a long time. I first did it as an airbrush painting many years ago. Thought it was time to bring it into zed.
The concept is the spectacular of the small.
"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour."
William Blake

It's also an allusion to the goddess who dreams the world.

Models to come soon.

Really nice Textures man I really like how it looks the skin shader. You should post more WIP . The cloth looks a little extrange to me Specialluy in the part were it blends with the model I can see some kind of glow betwen them.:) Good luck

Thanks!
Yeah you're right about the glow thing. It seems when I get enough photons bouncing around to pick up the skin the shirt gets glowy. Maybe I can map the irradiance color to control it. never tried that.

Thanks for putting me on your "keep checking" lists. My own list of favorite images is growing as long as Paris Hilton's "things I suck at" list!
I'll try to update with some more wip"s but the concept is so small and simple there's not really a lot to show, but I do have a few quirky approaches I'll share.
Thanks all.

Hi Glenn23,

great concept! :bounce:

The face is cool and the bubble is awesome.
Only one: In case the girl is actually blowing, there won't be a surface inside the bubble ring. At least, the surface had to be concave not convex.

In sum GREAT GREAT GREAT.

One of my considerations when I’m modeling fits in very nicely with the “oneness of scale” thing I’m exploring in this piece. I was once a studio assistant to Chuck Close and he shared a very interesting concept with me on the difference between “symbol” and “situation”. Some people might paint or model a “symbol” of a human mouth say – upper lip, lower lip, red, wavey top and round bottom or they might view the mouth as a “situation” of light and color, peaks and valleys, volume and space. I tend to work in the “situation” school of thought. I treat the human face as a landscape wherein the corner of the mouth is not the end of the mouth and the start of the cheek both an undulating terrain all its own. The closer you look the more you see. The further you step back the more is revealed. The scale changes but the revelation is the same.

I tried a bunch of different ways to get a believable sidelit peach fuzz in the renders. I finally started hand painting a layer. What do you think?

Gunilla

glenn23

I started with Miguel Santiago's dt3d skin shader that's based on an Oren Nayer. It has inputs for a fuzz effect but that really didn't get me all the way to were I wanted to go. Peachfuzz is not really a surface effect, It's actual geometry. I tried painting in the shader channels and thought about modeling tiny hairs but in the end I painted over the mental ray render in post.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Hi Glenn,
you found the perfect balance between texture and reflection for the bubble, it's beautiful now! Your comment under the wireframe picture is interesting...I understand what you mean, my question is: Would we see a difference in the wire if you modeled with another approach? Nevertheless, there's nothing to crit. And your skin test...what we think...are you kidding?
This is one of the best skin close ups i've seen so far. Just amazing ...

Here's a side by side showing the rendered frame and the handpainted fuzz frame. Pretty subtle and when you pull back almost subliminal, but it makes me happy to know it's in there.

Very nice image. I will have to put a lot of time into my texuring to compete with this :) Good concept and execution. My only crit would be the reflection of the childs face in the bubble looks a bit dark especially under the nose. Maybe and extra light or something could help this? It's a small crit, everything else, especially the skin is so tight. Great work Glenn.

WOW! What a fantastic final image! This is truly spectacular, in both story telling and execution. I have stared at this one for quite a while.

I do have a couple of things, but I feel as though I am really s t r e c h i n g. The detail in the scene is fantastic, namely the boy, his hand and bubble. I can't help but feel that the shirt and plastic bubble thing are a little bit behind. One other thing, and this is completly my opinion, I would have prefered a different crop.

Again, I find this image absolutely stunning. Congratulation and good luck!

I've been trying to get this thing to render at a higher res. If i go any higher than 2048 pixels it freezes. Sometimes I'm able to see the render is finished in the renderview but if I try to save the image the machine crashes and there's nothing in the images folder. Only happens with mental ray.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi Glenn,

It's a pleasure to meet you. Your work is amazing!

About the rendering issue, you might want to try rendering in passes at full res and compositing the channels using different transfer modes in Photoshop. This is what many renderers do internally anyway, but this will give you much more control over the final product and give you a little more artistic flexibility.

If that doesn't work, or if your renderer has a maximum pixel limit, you can break up your rendering into eight or so sections. Here's how it works:

First, render out nothing but the alpha channel. This doesn't have to be at full res but it needs to be as big as you can render it. Next, create a numbered grid of eight or so squares in Photoshop, matching the proportions of your intended rendered image. Each square can be a different color, like red and green, but they should be labeled.

Second, use the grid as a background plate. If your 3D software allows you to use a background image along with an alpha mask, then this would be best and you can ignore the very first step.

Next, drag a section marquee around the first background grid square (with your model if the foreground, of-course). Make sure to go a couple pixels beyond the grid lines. Some if not most of the grid squares might be obscured by your model but the important thing is to see just two intersecting lines so you can line them up in Photoshop. Render this section at full resolution. Do this for the remaining squares.

Finally, in Photoshop, create a file with the same proportions and desired resolution and up-sample just the alpha channel, if you couldn't render it along with the background, and use this as a layer mask (reveal all) for the foreground image. If you could include the alpha channel along with each grid square, then ignore this last step (this would be best). On a layer, bring in your grid (the one you used for your background image) and size it to fit proportionately. Last thing -- bring in each full-res rendered section as a layer and align the over-leaved edges of the grid lines. It might be helpful to turn down the opacity of each layer while checking the alignment.

That's it.

Hope this helps!

Amazing work!

I do agree with harryb! its a good way... but there is another way to try...I had the same situation and it helped :

Optimize mr memmory limits : u can try BSP or large BSP (for heavy scenes) , change BSP settings : BSP size > increase (this will use less memmory but will be slower) and BSP depth.

Hope this will help!

Goodluck!

Claudio, Harry and Arnas. Thanks so much for your advice! I probably don't have time to get it done on this piece but I know the render regions tip will save my ass in the future. The image looks pretty tight at 2048 by 2700 and hopefully that'll be good enough for now.
Very generous and helpful group here! Good on you all!

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for your compliments! I've put up a revised image. I found a weird compositing glitch in the water -- some kind of alpha channel artifact that didn't belong there.

Thanks for your praise for my story too! This means a lot, especially from someone who appreciates the work of William Blake.
