View Full Version : 3ds max - materials help
CMRVSUK 10-05-2005, 09:23 PM I can't make a convincing Rubber, Kevlar, Canvas or Khaki in 3ds max.
I think I have tried them all but my brain is ceasing with all the different colours and settings.
Which material type and shader do people recommend?
PS Any links to materials tutorials welcomed with opened loving arms

It's really a case of careful observation of a material in the real world, or a reference photo if you can't get the material / surface in question. I would strongly suggest you read the sticky thread 'texture tutorials' at the top of the forum. Another suggestion would be to visit your local library and hopefully they have a copy of 'digital lighting and rendering' or 'digital texturing' and you can read all about the theory behind the way a surface or material looks and learn some of the cg equivalents (also check amazon.com if you wish to purchase).
It is important to understand how and why a surface looks like it does before you just jump into technical settings and get bogged down. It's like trying to run before you can walk. I can't really stress this enough. There is no shortcut or magic fix that will give you consistent results developing a variety of textures and shaders. You absolutely have to understand light, colour and carefully observe the world around you to get good results. Sorry to rant, but I'd rather not lie to you and just give you a quick fix tutorial.
