Oke this will be my first entry here ever as a new member.

My idea for the contest after gone after to many idea's, is that of a little witch doing some experiments with magic, and by accident raises the dead.

The scene will be taking place within an old overgrown church ruine.

i hope i will get some help and tips on the rigging and uv mapping department because that's all very new to me.

Good luck to all of you

Oke, this is the first sketch i made of the little witch inspired by some picture, i believe i saw on the 3d gallery.

10-06-2005, 07:47 AM
Nice idea Wytze, I love witch stories  ... I'm very curious to discover the real mood in your church... certainly very interesting with all these magical things...

I wish you the best for your challenge and good continuation  :wavey:

A nice closeup on the head

10-09-2005, 07:28 PM
Looks like a good model :) of course, a lot depends on texturing and lighting, but the model itself looks well. If there is one point of critic for me it'd be the aspect between the body proportions; most of the body suggest a very thin (slightly young) person, and suddenly the breasts are relatively large. Though that's just me (years of 'girl with big guns' have kind-of affected my breast-criteria - shoot me if I use the word 'breast criteria' again).

Look forward to seeing what you'll do with it :) good luck.

10-09-2005, 07:46 PM
Wow Wytze, she looks awesome and I really like the concept too... This will be fun to watch...

10-09-2005, 08:13 PM
Hi Wytze,

great concept.

I agree with The Parrot.

Do you want to show a kindly witch or a wicked one?

10-09-2005, 08:17 PM
Well , she is a kind witch but with a little bit off evil touches.:)

10-10-2005, 07:28 AM
Oke starting with the old overgrown church ruin.

i don't have the whole scene in my head yet so any nice idea's are welcome for this.

10-12-2005, 12:19 AM
Very good start. I'll be watching your thread closely :D

What do you plan to do with the hair?

10-12-2005, 06:48 AM
I have not desided how i will be doing the hair, when i get enough time i want to try maya hair since i never used that before and want to try it.:)

First shot inside the church to try some camera angles, to get some good position for the overgrown stuff and the rest of the scene.

oke after some thought, i made up my mind and change the idea a bit.
The witch will now be in a magicroom cleaning up the books and mess with the help of some magic.

just added some books^^ more to come

10-17-2005, 06:21 PM
Great set,

but the books are looking a little bit 2D.

And, think againt about the pose of her arms.

10-17-2005, 06:51 PM
Very nice room. How about a closeup on those windows? :)

10-17-2005, 06:51 PM
Hi Wytse, me over here in yóur thread this time... ;)

Really cool stuff around here! That first sketch is really nice (and style-full! :) )! The modeling looks also really nice, dynamic and clean! I love that!

Hopefully you'll be able to light/texture it nicely! :) That would bring a really nice atmosphere with it...!?

By the way: what exactly on the image will be 'spectacular' in the final? You didn't explain that earlier (as far as I read), but it's always nice to know something about your thoughts of the image...

Have fun & Find luck!

10-18-2005, 07:54 AM
oke,the books are really lowpoly at the moment and need to be detailed more.

the thing with the windows is a bumpmap that will be replaced during texturing.

she is in my standard pose still i have not rigged here because i need to learn how to rig such detailed highpoly models, so any tips or tricks on that are more than welcome (i use maya 7)

and to all thx for the reply's i will keep an eye out for your work:thumbsup:

the spectacular idea after the idea change= she will be cleaning the room with magic, so think of flying books, bucket and mob cleaning on there own,etc

Keep an eye on those black artifacts on the upper part of the pillar. That would surely show up on your render.

Some of the first textures for the scene.

I would love to get some tips&tricks to render images at a high resolution without stalling my pc.(i have over 1million polygons in this scene and almost the same polygons for the witch) i use mental ray and maya 7

some more textures

11-01-2005, 10:04 PM
Hi Wytze,

great scene. Good textures.

But I'm afraid I had to crit some details:

The texture you laid ofn the chest ist to crude.
It supposed it's made of rough (means not plated) shelves.
This is in opposit to the gold plated fittings and the golden lock.
Try to make the structur of the texture a little bit thinner.
The books in the bookcase still looking 2D.
Maybe the reason ist that the wood texture hides the inner edge of the shelf.
Try to rotate the texture only on the backplane of the shelf by 90°.
The legs of the Lord's table suffer from the same problem.
The texture hides the edge of the square-shaped timber forming the table's leg.
Use different varieties of the same texture for both seen sides of the leg.
One side cut grain (cut annual rings), and the other side running grain.
And last but not least

Use some variations in the color of the wood.
I think this would give your scene more realsm
By the way, do you ever had heard from Goethe's poem "Der Zauberlehrling"?

11-02-2005, 01:27 AM

I think the books looking 2D may be caused by the lack of shadows on your image? It will surely gain more depth when you set up the lights ;)

11-02-2005, 07:20 AM
thx for pointing some of the problem area's to me, this beeing my first time i really texture all my work.

So it's all new to me, and any tip is more then welcome:thumbsup:

i will try to improve those things you told me about.

btw, if anyone can solve this renderproblem i have that would be sweet.

Problem= i can render at any resolution but if i want to save the renders that are higher then 2048x2048 it wil just make a 0kb file and not save a thing.

i use maya 7 and mental ray for rendering
pentium 4 3ghz
2gb ram
geforce 6600 256mb

added some textures and fixed some problems that was told to me.

to nemirc

the scene has got about 1.2mill polygons but that schould not be a problem with my hardware, so the render problem seems wierd.

trying some colors for the face(painting with a mouse is hard work).

11-05-2005, 08:28 AM
She has a very beautiful face.

11-05-2005, 06:53 PM
Hi Wytze,

The skin is very good. A little bit to good.
Give her some imperfection, some surface defection or bad spot.
And don't forget, a humans face is never symetric.
In every face there is at least one unsymetric objekt.
Mostly the nose is a little bit askew. -only a little little bit-

She is going to become a beauty!!

Marvelous work! :bounce:

@your render problems:
First, I had never used Maja or mental ray, but perhaps it ist something very basic
- do you use more then one (logical) hard disks? Is there enough free space on every in render progress used hard disk?
- Try to render a mosly empty scene at the critical resolution. If this is impossoble too, it looks a little bit like a destroyed installation of the renderer. Backup the hole system, deinstall the rederer, install it again and try. If not, restore the system.

But, this is only a assumtion. No warranty at all. Be careful to do a proper backup

11-05-2005, 10:30 PM
For such a professional looking model, I'm surprised to see a glaring error: her upper lip is WAY TOO BIG! Upper lips should be smaller that lower lips. Very nice modeling and texturing outside of that.

Sympa tas petite sorciere :) . Tiens je sais pas si tu connais ce site web http://www.mayalounge.com/forum/ . C'est un site francophone sur Maya. Il me semble qu'ils ont deja parlé de ton probleme de sauvegarde.

to C.Varenne sorry i don't speak french:sad:

11-07-2005, 08:55 PM
Sorry... I don't know y, I was sure you were french... . Probably the thread I red before you was a french guy...

By the way what type of shader do u use for your sorceress??? I am curious to see a preview render instead of a view render...

11-08-2005, 09:44 AM
i use a lambert schader at the moment with just the colormap on it right now.

i'm searching for a tutorial or tips to create a good skin schader( first time i texture my models ,so it's al new to me)

finally she's in the final pose

11-08-2005, 01:34 PM
to C.Varenne sorry i don't speak french:sad:

you can use babel fish for that ;)

btw that last pose looks a little weird :curious:

11-08-2005, 01:35 PM
okay...this is the first time i noticed this thread, anyways i was like..wooowww..till the last render where u wrote... the final pose..you are kidding right..please tell me you are...cause if you arent this stiff dolllike pose is by far tzhe best way to ruin al your hard work. now for the skin shader...u re using mental ray...id definitely suggest the 3 layer fast skin shader if maya has it... if u got any questions about it post me a pm and ill reply, this is a great work and id reeealy hate to see it ruined because of stupid stuff, keep it up:thumbsup:

11-08-2005, 06:00 PM
the more i see here in this pose the more i agree it's a compleet dull way of showing here so i will be trying to set her to a different pose( i have done this one with latice, because of the lack of exp with rigging).

the three layer schader for the skin i will give it a try.

Damn i want more time to work on this:cry:

Oke making up for the last bad pose, i got the hair a color(just a color no real texture) i think this pink/purple will be a nice color for the hair.

any comments are more then welcome^^

11-09-2005, 12:43 AM
If you want to have a look at some good skin shader have a look at highend 3d website. There is plenty of it. If you want some tutorial about SSS fast skin shader I got plenty of it as well so let me know I will give you. ;) BTW yes this pose is very dule it waste completly your character.

11-09-2005, 04:17 AM
or you can try using the DT3D skin shader :)

11-09-2005, 03:32 PM
I get your mail here what I get. Yu are a lucky I spend ages to find some good tutorial:thumbsup: . Have fun.

So here's a list for the fast Skin shader for MENTAL RAY tutorial, and some tutorial for skin shader and texturing:

11-09-2005, 04:40 PM
thx for the tutorials i will try them out as soon as possible.

also i have been working on the hair a bit today maybe a new render tomorrow ^^

oke this here is my first try with the sss fast skin schader for mental ray.

and some questions for those who know this schader better then me.

why is there some geometry showing through?

how can i make this one more humanlike?

what will be a good lighting setup for testing this schader?

11-10-2005, 08:23 AM
the geometry appears when u leave the lightmap unchanged and samples also, increase them by double.

than there is an issue of maps, it allmost seams that u used a falloff map..remove it if u did..that is a lame trick to be used with a powerful material such as this, make a snapshot of the material settings and send them ..than ill have more defined advices

well today we learned that im an idiot who forgets to empty the pm inbox lolbuuut anyways
1 tha shade itself is the main problem, u see there is a little fact about the skin it is composited of several colours one of which is beleive it or not green, ill send u a shader sketch later, but first i need u to tell me which areas here are filled with maps, u see u need atleast 3 maps, first layer scatter map, it is usualy desaturated, and is a means of controlling the saturation of the skin, the second layer, which contains the important colour information and the specular or reflection weight map..which is obvious, the first desaturated map can also be used as a means of control by reapplying it onto the unscattered diffuse colour while u dont apply a map for the overall colour, why .well by leaving a colour option on that one u will increase control over the skintones now there is a mean thing with that material..u see it wont scatter if the object is actually attached, for instance..u texture the face with it and the face is on the body which is textured with lets say raytrace material..and the nice scattering effect doesnt appear..well..the trick is to detach it..its annoying but the result is worth it

Hi Wytze,

the skin looks good. Already yet.

But the eyes are looking a little bit strange. The pupil should have a separat bulge.
Take yourself as refer. Close your eyes, put a finger on your lid, and then roll your eyes from left to right. You feel it?

Oke i have seen the reply's and i will try all those things tomorrow since i got a day off, so i can get my full concentration on it.

oke time to tell a little backgroundstory to make some points clear.

Kayla(yes i have given her a name now) was ordered by the head fairywitch, to clean up the magicroom as a punnishment.
She had done dangerous magic on her own, and messed up again!!
So here we are at the magicroom and instead of cleaning up she begins to experiment some more with magicspells, and after an hour or so she has done it again!
A puddle appears inside the pentagram of books, and before she knows it three skeletons are coming from it to get her.
Thinking about what the headwitch would do to her if she finds out, she graspes a dragonfirespellbook and begins casting a blaze of fire on the skeletons to dismiss them herself.

(and that moment is my image, will it work against those skeletons that's for your imagination to find out:twisted: )

almost done with the textures(not happy with the skin of the witch and of the skeletons). and then on to the lighting and effects, etc.

(^_^)it's gona be close to finish this on time.

oke this is the rendershot for the scene itself i have to do some things seperatly since i have some render problems, so the witch, skeletons and fire effects are rendered on there own and in the posteffects&composition all will be mixed together with some magic inside photoshop.

I love the lighting and mood you have set here...I can hardly wait to see your final work!!

Fantastic work!

11-29-2005, 08:20 PM
Woooooooow Wytse! :scream: What a daaaamn brilliant lighting! I really love the mood and the level of realism with that lighting! :) Are these 'just some lights' or did you also play with radiosity and so? As I always say that the lighting (/shading) really make the scene a good or bad one (if it has bad lighting, you'll very quick just click it away... if it's good your interested in it... at least, thats what I found out myself :scream: )! So your one is a good one! ;)

Good luck with your futher updates! I'm really bouncing ( :bounce: ) on my chair of that lighting (and the fact that all work does show itselfes of so nice in this stadium :) )!

[ps: again thanks for your interest and reply in my thread :) ]

11-29-2005, 08:58 PM
thanks for the great compliments all.

and to dutchman and others who are interested in the lighting, i will tell what most lights do in the scene.

bij the windows i have some spotlights that point throu the windows that will fake light from a fullmoon night.

all the candlelights are pointlights(in max it's called omni's if i'm not mistaken) that bring some subtle light's to the scene

inside the pentagram of books is a bigger and stronger version of a pointlight with some decay settings this will be used to bring out the effect of the fireblaze that i had to render seperatly due to my huge renderproblems:sad:

and last butt not least a ambientlight to brighten up the whole scene a bit since otherwise some area's would fall away into the darkness.

ps. I hope i explaned it correctly since this was my first time lighting such a scene.

during my composition i found out that the black hat and dress faded away against the dark scene, so i changed the color for this.

i think i almost got the setup for the final image.

11-30-2005, 02:37 PM
drop a few omni lights into the fire..it neeeds it..otherwise sweet stuff, her skirt material is a little too specular

11-30-2005, 03:12 PM
Hey witze, that composition looks pretty cool, some ilumination effects acroos the windows would be cool, keep up man :bounce:

Somewhere in a far awayland.

Lives a Little witchfairy who's name is Kayla, "she has a real talent of getting into trouble!!" say'd the headfairy to the master of the magicschool.

Kayla walked slowly through the hallways, on her way to the magicroom.
She had been given the punishment to clean it up, for practicing forbidden magic.
"Ah finally i made it!!,these stupid hallway's are way to long" say'd Kayla.

She immediatly began searching the bookwall for more exiting and forbidden spellbooks, forgetting al about the real reason why she was there.
And yet again within an hour or so she had done it again, from the puddle of water on the floor inside her pentagram began to rise three dangerous skeletons.

Thinking about what the headfairy would do to her, if she found out.
Kayla grasped a firespellbook from the bookwall, and began casting a blaze of fire on the skeletons.

Well that's the story to this point, I will leave the rest open for your imagination(^_^)
