CGTalk - 3dsmax animation question

I have to do an animation for my English class (of the opener for Great Expectations if you were wondering) and upon completion of the scene, began animating. Then I realized that I did not know how to render the animation in 3dsmax 6 with Mentalray, or just how to get the materials to show up in the animation. Any help?
