CGTalk - Harddrive question

Ok so bestbuy has a 80gig western digital 7200rpm for $80($50mail-in-rebate) but it only has 2mb buffer size, while the special edition hd's from wd have 8mb buffer size. How much of a difference does that make? I'm looking for a new harddrive and want to do my homework before I drop around $100 on a hard drive. Thanks.

Is that before or after the rebate. If it is after, keep looking arround. I just got the special edition from dell for about $96 after tax and shipping. check out hot-deals.org (http://ww.hot-deals.org) you can some time find great deals there. At one point they had the 120gb version for $69 after rebates. A lot of there deals are for one or two days only so you need to check it often.

As far as performance, it does have faster access time and is quieter. I will try to find a link to the comparisons (it on my old hard Drive)

The special edition drives also have a 3 year warranty. The normal WD drives only have 1 year warranties.

You can purchase an extended warranty for the normal drives from WD, but when you add the cost of that, to the cost of the drive, its usually more expensive then the SE (JB drives) drives.

Anyway, I bought the 80gb earlier today after seeing it at FatWallet.

I'll let you know how it compares to my current 2nd HDD, a maxtor 80GB 7200rpm 2MB.

Thank you very much for the information about where to buy it, once I get home I'll be ordering that. I knew that western digital, warrenties to 1 year except for the special edition hard drives and some others and that was another factor in my mind which i forgot to type. Thanks again
