Does anyone know what the size of the CG industry is, as in how many people it employs? (spanning film/TV/games etc). Ive never been able to find a figure...

The CGI industry as in animation and special effects...is HUGE I cant stress how big and popula the industry is.....studios like Pixar and ILM get the spotlight but there are HUNDREDS of other studios...some just as good some better and obiously some not that good,

But yea its a MASSIVE industry

I'd be more interested in finding out how many people WANT to work in the industry as opposed to how many CAN work in the industry.

Hum dee dee dum....

If I'm not wrong, the cg industry employs about 120000 people.

Yet we hear how everyone is at most about 3 degrees of separation from eachother.

There are 190,000 + members on this board alone. Sure, not all of them work in the industry but it gives you an idea of the amount of people interested and working in the field. Let's say that 100,000 from the board work in the field... then maybe for every one of those there are 20+ others who don't know about this site. That would make at least 2 million people.

I'm probably way off, but I don't know how else I could work something like that out.

I've come to find out it's not as big as I once thought it was. Meeting people is kind of cool, because you get the "Oh you're the dude with the..." comments. Then it broadens into, "Hey check this guy out, he's the dude with the..." comments.

I can definitely see how word of mouth can get people around in this industry. So to me it doesn't appear as large as it seemed. But that's probably because I've only spoken to a specific group of people. I'm sure there are lots of "pocket" industries in CG, so the 2 million mark may not be far off.

Hmm that is a very good question... both the how many work..and how many want to work. :)

What do you count as CG work?
3D work only or also 2D work? Video Effects? Photoshop mods? Flash? animated GIFs?
Sorry, any answer is meaningless without knowing the real question.
