View Full Version : Max --> Maya Workflow Questions
Hey guys,
I have one or two very simple questions regarding the workflow of Maya (6.0).
Actually im a Maxer (since 7 Years) but i have to learn the other side now, and im looking forward to that. (the firm i will work for only use Maya...)
Right now im fighting with the manual and the tutorials and i definately know the face of learning this stuff before starting to question about....
but please allow me one or two questions.
In Max you are able to create every primitive at every point in your scene. Maya too? Or only at 0,0,0 ?
The second Q is, when you are editing a poly object you can drag / move the faces when hitting the middle center point on the face.
Is there a possibility to select a face (example a simple box)
by just clicking on a face and not the specific center point?
And then to grow or shrink the selection by example + and - ?
That would be great..
Your help would be appreciated..
regards...

ok... i've done the same passage and i know... it hurts at the beginning...
1) primitive has to be created at 0,0,0... that's it
2) go to preferences --> selection --> whole faces but i don't really reccomend this...
3) you can use shift + > and shift + < (or use the command from "edit polygons --> selection --> grow) but sometimes it works and sometimes not... i don't really know why!
hope to have helped u :D

You might find this thread useful if you haven't seen it already-

It certainly helped me out.
I don't know why nookie doesn't recommend turning on whole faces for selections. Pretty much the first thing I customised in Maya and it's never been turned off again and never caused any problems.
Grow and Shrink Selection are on the Ctrl+Right click marking menu too.
I'd also recommend making a tool on a shelf or something for edit> delete by type> history. You'll be using that a lot. It's the equivalent of collapsing the stack in max.
I also put Freeze Transform and Centre Pivot on my custom shelf straight away too.
Holy Moly...Thx alot guys...!!!
@nookie --> thats definately what i have searched for...cool !
@robinb --> thx for the tips buddy.

Absolutely ! My thoughts too...
I will also check the link, seems to be handy...
I really appreciate your help... The first steps are a bit confusing, and you are always thinking of how to do that (what you did for years) now in Maya...HeHe but i like the software very much - its definately different from the workflow aspect - but it was time for me learning the otherside too :bounce:
Sorry again for the noobish questions mates...

Actually you can type the exact coordinates before you create a NURBS object in its options. Most of the commands in Maya have options that can be used before executing the command - it is the litle box at the end of the commands on the menu.
However as far as I know, most people would do this in a faster way by typing the object's position in the channel box after its creation.
The major difference between both ways is that the options will create the object with frozen transformations, while the channel box will show the new object coordinates in reference to the Center of the World.
You can also try my way of positioning objects when your view is focused away from the center of the world - I create the object and I don't see it, but I never change my view to get to it, instead I do one of these:
hold x, or c, or v and click with the MMB on a grid, edge, or point/handle of another objects and the new object will move and snap right there.
In case of snapping to the grid in perspective view where you don’t see the grid at all, refer to the axis or the compass to visualize the grid orientation – because you may have difficulty performing this if the grid is in or close to normal orientation to the view.

if u press shift+g it will perform last action under the mouse cursor....
so if you create a sphere, it will be at 0,0,0......but then do it again anywhere in the viewport....it will create it where the mouse cursor is.
@emil3d & @ 2byts
thx a lot guys...
As you know i came from max and i was really surprised not to create
the primitives at any choosen point like in max.
(Where you can create it and also immediately set the height and width and so on...)
Right now i have the feeling of working like a snail and that really pXXX me off...HeHe..but the beginning is always hard.
Perhaps i have also stop thinking like "How did i do that in Max" and start thinking - How can i do that in Maya...:)
I also recognized that in Maya (without Mel Scripts) there is no comparison to the Edge / Ring Loop, apart from the Edge Contiguous Function, right mates?

2bytes thank you for sharing this one. That’s new to me, and I tried it but unfortunately it didn’t work for me as described. It creates some offset form the mouse position that often sends the object off the view. How does it work for you?
Strange man, for me it works like a charm...as 2byts explained....

For me It works only in a very close up view but that's because the size of the object covers the offset from the mouse to the pivot.
Please try this for me: zoom out a lot and then try it and tell me if the object still apear under the cursor without any offset. Also go to the 4 view layout and try it on the perspective view - in this case for me the object goes off the view and I have to press "a" to see it.

HaHaHa!! Damn buddy, same with me, as i zoomed out i definately noticed the offset - therefore you are absolutely right, hmmm, grrrr...
Dr.2byts, eh .. perhaps another hint on that?
