View Full Version : maya running slow and freezing
thumperg04 11-11-2002, 08:57 PM Im am doing a character tutorial and i have gotten all the body modeled. now i am putting it together and when i imported the files to each other my pc slows down alot and maya freezes also. I wouldnt think this should be happening on the machine i have (dual p3 gigs). the model is a poly model and is under a 1000 count. Please help it is really frustrating.

maybe you have been working with history on and haven't deleted it yet - just a guess - if you have more details about the problem post them

Ive gone into Edit>Delete>Delete all by type>History, but i will try again. More about the problem?...Well the different scenes were running slow before I merged them and now that I have put all the parts together, I can barely move one vert. And when i do try anything, Maya Freezes. Thats really it. Its a low poly, Sub-D model. Thats all i can really say

how many objects are there? are they all combined into a couple poly objects?

are you using CPS, smoothing proxy, or real sub-d ?
if you are using CPS you might have a too high subdivison value for modeling
basically, does hiding your smoothed version improve interactive performance?

It is real sub-d (on sub-d can you hide the hi poly and just view the low poly though?). There arent that many parts to it, i modeled the body, head, and ear seperatly. then attached the ear to the head and now im trying to attach the head to the body but it is running slow. the head and the body are not combined yet.
thank you for the help!!

you can hide the sub-d shape either by
a) hiding the SubdShape node in the outliner
b) or hiding subdiv surfaces in your viewport Show->Subdiv Surfaces
decrease the display quality of your sub-d (same as with nurbs - select your objects and press either 1,2 or 3)
have you worked on the poly cage only or have you done hierarchical edits too? if you have all your edits in the poly cage you can disconnect the cage and reconvert it to a fresh subiv surface

Thank You, i will try those things, and thank you for the quick lesson on sub-d (im still somewhat new to using maya), but for now, its sleepy time.

Ok, so i didnt go to sleep...i went back to the scenes before they were together and i got the head fixed. but the body is not any better. I looked around and i noticed i had "PolyBlindData n "(?) about 7 times under my poly cage in the outliner. I had these on the head and i got rid of them and the head runs fine. also how would i go about disconnecting the cage from the sub-d mesh if i could.
Thank you so much again (im excited just to get the head running faster)!!!!!

select your subdiv polygon cage - duplicate it - delete history on it (maybe that's suplerfluous but it doesn't hurt) - i'd even export it and start a fresh file - just to be sure - import it - and then Modify->Convert Polygons to Subdiv - you'll have a fresh model again
this will of course only make sense if you have not performed any hierarchical edits (i.e. just worked on the polygonal cage)
if you search the forum for blind data nodes you'll find even more information - they are well known for slowing subdivs down - i'm not using subdivs anymore - so i'm not too sure
I run into similar problems last week during modelling of a character in sub-D. After some time of fiddling around i, found 2 things that really helped me speeding up the work with the sub-d´s.
1. Sometimes these BlindData nodes pop up and slow it really down. So always look for them and delete em.
2. Assign the Sub-D to a layer (and if you want toggle it with a hotkey :) ). To do this, select your charakter, then press the down arrow so you only select the Sub-D and not the PolyCage and then put it on a layer.
I also noticed the really long time (about 5mins, XP1900)it took to merge the 2 half´s of the body,it seems as maya was froozen but it wasnt. Looking in the Task Manager i noticed i run out of ram (working with 512mb) an the Swap file went up from 90mb to 780mb!!. This Charakter was low poly (around 3000verts)and i was really surprised with this amount of RAM usage. Solution: Converting back to Poly --> Merging --> converting back to Sub-D.
Sry for my bad english ;)

Tek,
That is exactly what is happening. I have tried to delete the Blind Data Nodes but couldnt. How do I go about doing that.

Ok... I have fixed all the problems. It runs perfect now. I finally deleted the blind data nodes and that was it.
thank you all for the help, this was my first post and i will definetly keep coming back.
:applause:
Glad you got it :) ,
hm do you have any clue where the BlindDataNodes come from? I got em really often, and i keep deleting them. But i´m just curios what i´m doing wrong to get these.

I am having the EXACT same problem in maya3.0
I have a low poly character, and it takes DAYS to combine with my body and head (days = minutes, which is still to long)
When i bring up attriubute editor there are a HUGE amount of variables, anyway i can make it compact? Or anyone help me how to fix this plz? its unbarable, i tried to UV the head and it took over 5 minutes, the head is only 300 polys

Tek- I have no idea what the blind data nodes are and i couldnt find what they are.
Laker- the way i fixed my head is i duplicted it but did not duplicate the upstream data, so it was sort of like a fresh start with no history, i think (im still learnin).
