A while back, ScottA was kind enough to give me advice on unwrapping a Model in Bodypaint but I am running into a few problems.

I do it this way:
1.) Load the model
2.) Select new material from the materials pallete
3.) Drag and drop the new material onto the model
4.) When the window pops up. Choose the UVW or other mapping type if you like then select OK
5.) Select the "Texture" Tab to switch to the UV layout window
6.) Select File-> New texture. The name will be something like Untitled_1. chose OK
7.) From the tools menu select Show UV Mesh
8.) select the "view" tab to go back to the main window
9.) Open the new material you made earlier in the materials manager and in the color channel click on the small arrow to the right of the texture browser box. Then select bitmaps
10.)You should see your new texture in the list you created in there called something like Untitled_1.b3d
11.) Select that texture
12.) Go to brushes and select one you like
13.) Paint on the model. A message will pop up asking if you want to apply new materials permanently. Choose YES.

Done.
It's very easy. But there are lots of steps to go through. So it's confusing if you're new to this tuff.

1. Do I have to make my model "Editable" to create a UV map?

5. I don't see how you get to the UV layout window from the Texture Tab. Does he mean select "BP UV Edit" or "BP 3D Paint" from the layout button? It Can use "BP UV Edit" or "BP 3D Paint" to do this?

6. The default color here is black is that what I want?

9. After I select bitmaps my model is all black because the default color was black in step #6 Is this right?

13. Why do I have to paint on my model if I want to unwrap it. Can't I just get a mesh of it?

Really confused!

1. Each object that you want to paint must be made editable. This assigns a UVW tag. Until you make an object editable it doesn't have real polygons that you would normal work on to model. Then for each regular polygon there is a UV polygon.

5. The UV layout window is the 2D window that you see in the UV edit layout. You can get this window in the 3D layout by selecting it from the viewport tab.

6. You can change the colours to what ever suits you. I would suggest starting off with white. You then create a layer and paint on that with whatever colour you want.

9. You get whatever colour you set up.

13. You don't have to apply paint to unwrap it. You can work on the UV's without applying paint.

My DVD which goes on sale in a day or so would be a big help. Here's a preview of it

Hope this helps.

3DKiwi,

Those videos look excellent. Any idea on how much they'll cost?
How soon will they be on available?

3DKiwi, or someone else, if you could help me out with this I'd really appreciate it. I need to get this project done by tomorrow and I am not sure where I am going wrong. Here's the steps I have taken.

First, I created the model. I have created a barrel for this project.

1. Select the individual model parts and make them editable.
2. Next, I selected all of the model parts from the "Object Manager" and Grouped them.
3. Next, I created a new material and gave it a color. Then I dragged it onto my grouped model in the Object Manager. This colored all of the model parts.
4. Next, I selected the material icon in the "Object Manager" and under "Projection" selected UVW or other mapping type. Then I selected OK
5. Now from the Layout menu, I changed the layout view from Standard or Modeling to "BP UV Edit".
6. Now, I selected (File > New Texture), The default color is black, but I would select white.
7. Next, I selected "Show UV Mesh".
8. I then selected the original material I made for the model from the Materials Manager, and with the color channel selected, clicked on the small arrow to the right of the texture browser box and selected bitmaps.
9. I saw my new texture in the list named: Untitled_1
10. I selected that texture, then closed the "Material Editor".

Here's where I am lost. I want to see a flat unwrapped wireframe of my model, but all I see is white. What do I do to see and get an unwrapped wireframe of my model so I can save this and open it in Photoshop?

If I paint the UV map in photoshop, how do I then apply the UV map to the model again. Sorry if I am not using the correct terminology. I know what i want, but I am not getting the results.

Please tell me where I am going wrong.

My DVD is $59.99 including postage. Should be on sale tomorrow with luck.

Feel free to zip up your scene file and email to me. I could knock out a quickie Flash video of me applying a texture etc.

Sounds almost as though you're not creating your material right. You need to create a texture map for it after creating the new material. You do this by right clicking and creating the various channels. If you're struggling with this you could always use the wizard to make the materials and apply them. You can then edit whatever UV maps the Wizard gives you.

To paint things in Photoshop you need to select all of the UV's and use the outline UV command. make sure to have a 1pixel brush. Sabe the texture map. Open in Photoshop and paint on a new layer. Save the file. You can actually work with BP open. Just use the reload texture command in BP on the material.

5.00 p.m. here so I've got a bit of time to play if you want to send me your file.

Hi to make a black and white color map of your mesh start with a white background you can then use a command called outline polygones if you can not find it on your tool bars go into the command manager and drag it out on to a tool bar first of all set your brush size to some think suitible and change your colour to black next click on the polygone edit tool next click on the outline polygones tool this will paint all the polygone lines black on your white background cheers.

Ray.
