Please change the Rio team link to this server as soon as possible:
http://www.jushhome.com/pxc/TEAMRIO_FXWARS_960x540_sor3.mov

The codesign server in Germany (and all the sorenson versions) were intended only as a mirror.
This server is about to hit it's max bandwidth limit for the month in a single day.

We will try to setup another mirror shortly as well.
Thank you. :)

Here's another mirror for the same file linked in the voting thread:

Thanks.

Thanks again for the help Roberto.
I think it's OK to leave the voting link as is now if you like.
That server has been reprogrammed to rotate dowloads from our mirrors, so we can even update that script to do some load balancing the downloads even as we add more mirrors.

Again thanks for the support and thanks to the CGTalk community for all the interest.

Hey! I want a chance to join if it's ok to bail last minute. I really want to try making the short, but i just might not be able to finish for a couple of reasons:

1) I joined half way into the project (duh)
2) Though i think i can fix it, my 3ds computer is currently down
3) I'm a high-school student, so I may not get the time to do it

But please! put me on the list so that I might have a chance to enter!

I just realized-you meant THIS monday right?

Aw %$&! I really read that wrong:banghead:. Sorry for the bad post.

Well here it is!

There's so much that we could've/should've/would've done...but due to the busyness of our schedules and lack of time to work on it this is what we've got to show instead ;)

I'm noticing that the music drowns out the sound effects quite a bit....so I'll post a music-less version soon.

10-03-2005, 08:07 PM
Well I'm glad you guys like it :)

By the way....just so everyone knows, the clip was created by both me and Danny Robashkin.

I was in charge of:

-helicopter motion animation
-oil rig
-dock and dock breakup/debris
-sound effects (which will be more audible once I upload the music-less version)

Danny was therefore in charge of:

-atmospherics
-water
-extra dock debris particles (any of the smaller ones you see)
-prop boats
-final composite

Firstly, wow again, ivanisavich. Fantastic shots.

Roberto,
In the original rules and discussion there was a lot of emphasis on requiring a live action shot composite, and a a voting category for compositing.
Is there a reason this was left out of the final voting list?

RobertoOrtiz
10-03-2005, 10:27 PM
To be honest it was something I missed.

Sorry for that.

Having said that, we have an upcoming challenge that will make
the Blizzard challenge look easy in comparison.

This month we will do Draculas castle and Ill keep the current rules for the challenge since people will have a short amount of time to do it.

The entire dock crash was a reactor simulation  ...haha...you can imagine how long it took to calculate :P.......the only part of it that wasn't, was the motion of the helicopter. I animated how I thought the helicopter should fall/crash first, then placed a dock in its path and booom :D

Sadly, today my host stopped serving me, so the file is offline! If you have some bandwidth you could miss, please PM/mail/reply, as we don't get people watching with the file being offline...! Hopefully somebody can help me (soon!)

So íf you have some extra space for a sad student ;) , let me know...! :) At this moment the file is 47 MB, but if you think that'd be better for your server, I could try to resize it (again) (but then the quality is going back and back, again... )

Sorry for that.
Sorry? Robert your rules were quite clear and included:

"""Since this is a composite war you NEED to add live action footage to at least one sequence."""

[[[ BTW, I've been watching from a distance... considering entering one of these challenges. I'd like to think these are actually rules and not just loose guidelines. ]]]

ivanisavich

Hey longorshort,

Calm down man...these are just fun challenges to encourage community envolvement and to practice our skills and talents. You should be thanking Roberto for the amount of time and energy he puts into organizing these things, rather than scolding him for making a puny mistake.

Sheesh!

longorshort

Calm down man...
...You should be thanking Roberto for the amount of time and energy he puts into organizing these things, rather than scolding him for making a puny mistake.
Sheesh!

You're kidding right?

I am calm. Since when is an outsider to a challenge not allowed to point out very important details?

Everyone else can make a comment, but I am too be scolded for calmly pointing out the rules of the challenge?

If anyone here should not be calm it would be the team(s) that spent weeks of their spare time on this challenge and followed the rules, and then watched teams that didn't follow the rules allowed to compete (and god forbid win).

This has nothing to do with talent. It has to do with parameters.

If the challenge said to model a frog and someone submitted a lizard I would hope someone would have the intelligence to speak up and know the difference. It seems the "Live Action" rule was somehow overlooked by some contestants.

So I'm the bad guy for saying "hey, that's not a frog, it's a lizard".

Again, this has nothing to do with talent. Just parameters. So what's the crime with me asking about degrees of clarity?

Why verbally lash out at me. I wasn't asking you a question. I was asking someone else. And you didn't answer my question you chose instead to attack me. Just as you chose which rules you would follow and which to ignore. Seems you at least have consistency in that regard.

Stop me when I've missed a fact.

ivanisavich
10-05-2005, 04:36 AM
You're kidding right?

uuuh...no. Not really, no.

Since when is an outsider to a challenge not allowed to point out very important details?

You should have pointed out your concern before the challenge ended.

If anyone here should not be calm it would be the team(s) that spent weeks of their spare time on this challenge and followed the rules, and then watched teams that didn't follow the rules allowed to compete (and god forbid win).

The only one that I can see that didn't include any actual compositing was 3d effect's entry...and he's already stated in his thread that he had to cut a lot of corners to get his entry done on time (and that's understandable....since all the teams had to do that to some extent). I fail to see why you are getting so upset about this.

This has nothing to do with talent. It has to do with parameters.

Well then you've clearly misunderstood the purposes of these challenges! They are to have fun and practice our skills. The voting/winning is only bonus.

Again, this has nothing to do with talent. Just parameters. So what's the crime with me asking about degrees of clarity?

You had plenty of time to ask for clarity before the challenge entered. If you saw people working on an entry that you don't feel was submissable...then you should have raised your voice before the challenge finished! I'm sure Roberto would have taken your remarks into consideration had you said your speak then.

Why verbally lash out at me. I wasn't asking you a question. I was asking someone else. And you didn't answer my question you chose instead to attack me. Just as you chose which rules you would follow and which to ignore. Seems you at least have consistency in that regard.

a) I didn't lash out at you. I was simply defending Roberto. You posted your concerns on a public forum, which means that anyone has the right to try and address them (especially a contestant in the challenge, who you are clearly pointing a finger at. If you didn't want other people to respond you simply should have PM'd Roberto your concerns

b) I'm assuming by "just as you chose which rules you would follow" you're somehow inferring that our shot didn't include a composite? Well I beg to differ!

Here was the original photo we took the oilrig from:

http://www.theonlyt.com/Main/Animations/Freeze/oilrig.jpg

Obviously, I had to build a great number of object mattes in order to achieve proper parralax on the oilrig as the camera moves, I had to paint out the background, color correct the whole thing and composite in the helicopter/other-elements. If you don't consider that a composite shot then I can't help ya!

c) I still do not understand all the animosity you seem to be pouring out towards whichever entries you didn't like in this challenge. Once again, all of the teams that entered this challenge put in a lot of hard work...and you should be congratulating rather then condemning.

longorshort
10-05-2005, 04:54 AM
Well I can see you just want to argue. So to break down your post would be a waste of time. I probably wouldn't start with trying to explain that a jpg is not "live action", but I wouldn't end there as well.

You are focusing on me and getting defensive. I asked a question. I was expecting an answer, not an onslaught of garbage that you spewed out.

A lizard is not a frog.

Your portfolio on your site is amazing. I wish your manners were as refined.

ivanisavich
10-05-2005, 04:59 AM
Quoted directly from the "rules" thread:

Since this is a composite war you NEED to add live action footage to at least one sequence. It might be a composite shot or a filmed sequence. because of the high level of dificulty, It is STRONGLY encouraged that this challenge be done in teams.

Posted by Roberto in the same thread, while answering questions:

Guys you know that live action can be Digital photgraphs too?
What we are pushing in here is for people to practice they composite skills.

Case made.

I'm not here to argue with you dude....I just don't want you putting any of the entries in a bad light for no reason. Clearly you can see, that by compositing a jpeg, we followed the rules just fine.

I wish your manners were as refined.

 There was no reason for a personal attack like that. So far I've addressed your points in a mannerly fashion and that's all.

10-05-2005, 05:31 AM
tyson you dont want to admit you are disqualified !!! lol

longorshort if you look carefully you can see a small person running in the plataform , is just a pixel tall but you can consider that live action :) no siriously , i think even its a rule , roberto is the one who organize this , if he decide theres no problem we should respect that and say tx for do this , he realy push us a lot with daly sketch , and fx wars.. GRACIAS ROBERTO .. yano puedo esperar a ver el nuevo tema , :)

[attempt to be levelheaded, unbiased observer]

longorshort: For what it's worth, I would guess that ivanisavich's "calm down" comment was a reaction to all the bold type (roughly equivallent to yelling in a setting like this) at the end of your initial post. Just pointing out that it's not an invalid reaction on his part.

It seems to me that the only thing that Roberto forgot was one category in the voting system. Doesn't seem like a big deal really. I doubt that any one in any of the teams spent two months of effort in the hopes of winning that one category. FWIW, I'd agree with ivanisavich's assessment of this being a minor oversight.

If anyone here should not be calm it would be the team(s) that spent weeks of their spare time on this challenge....
Exactly.
The fact that none of the teams are objecting to anything should carry some weight in itself.

Anyway,
In terms of your question (seems to be centered on if a picture qualifies as a live action composite), it looks like it has indeed been addressed by ivanisavich's (Dude, can I call you Tyson?) quote from the rules thread which addresses this quite clearly.

If not, there's another exchange in the Minn. thread where Tyson directly notes that the use of this jpeg as a camera map is their live shot comp and Roberto acknoweldges favorablely. Since Roberto is the sole "judge" this is effectively should put any concern to rest.

[/attempt to be levelheaded, unbiased observer]

And now, back to your regularly scheduled voting....
BTW: We're working on getting some hosting for the Dutchman entry. Hopefully we'll see their entry back online by day's end.
