Hello people!

As this challenge is kind of funny, I've been interested in seeing what's going on with this nice Christmas subject, even if in Septembre! And as french people seem to be active these days here, I've decided to join the party too. So here is the first sketch for the whole "concept/mood/staging of the image". It's been done last thursday, when I started the challenge :

As you can see, it's about a child that enters the christmas tree room by night... And such a surprise to see Santa trying to avoid the little mouse that has been disturbing him while he was working ; so you can see that everything is kind of messy around, with broken presents, debris of struggle and so on!

A few examples of sketches in searching for the mood I'kk have to set up on Santa's face, and trying to figure out who he is gonna look at : us (AKA the kid we se the shadow in foreground) or the mouse??

First try was made on the tree to decide on what kind of rendering style I was to go for : I''l try to give a feeling of small scale scene, as if it had been done with clay puppets and small props. It meens that I'll try to do things like tree leaves bigger than nature, in order to show that it's a real tree branch but due to the small scale of the scene, it appears bigger than nature, got it??!!!

Here is the tree right now :

And finally, I started to work on the whole scene, trying to catch up the few days I should have worked on this project to be on schedule...
A first rough try, about lighting, material for the ground and setting up the scene (proportions, place for each important element...) :

So here we are, I have done some more elements today but not rendered yet, so I'll try to keep updating monday if I find some time, but I think the deadline is really close now, so don't get angry if I can't update before final release ;)

Hi.

Back again, with the beginning of modeling for Santa. It's actually really nice to work on that kind of character in that kind of style, in a cartoonish way. For a first attempt at character modeling, I do like that!

You may also notice the presence of the mouse, in order to help texturing the eyes watching at it :

So here we are with the eyes, very basic ones, but they do the job : they give Santa's face the mood I wanted to see. You can also see the shadow of the little girl watching at this scene. Does it work so far?

For the background, you see the wallpaper, it's been done by a columbian artist, Sarita Leclerc ; she is also giving a hand on this little project by preparing the other textures, mainly present papers. I like the wallpaper she did, it's just as the image needed it : blueish tints, details but also big visible things in it, so that it adds lot of stuff to the background without having to model something, and it's still really "readable" from this distance, not disturbing at all. Nice, in a word ;)

I like it. It's a different but fitting twist to Santa. It lends him a certain mysticism. Very original. Now give it some wicked lighting and volumetrics and you got yourself a real winner:thumbsup:

Cool stuff,
Daoine

Hi Daoine, and thanks for the encouragments!
You're right with the need for volumetric lights, I am already going in that direction actually, and it gives lot of atmosphere to the picture. Will let you see as soon as I have new renders, but am struggling to keep in schedule...

I was starting to wonder if I wasn't out of topic for this challenge as nobody left any crit or comment, so feel free, fellow cgtalkers, to let a few words ;)

OK, here is the result so far :

The main things are here, there is only a levels and contrast post-prod, but I think it's allowed! Of course, there are still lot of details that could be changed, but the render was kind of long for the high resolution version (more than 4h...). So we'll see, regarding to critics, what we do tomorrow, just before the deadline!

Thanks marcom, nice idea, actually. I encountered real good angles hanging around in the room with the camera, but I can't leave this angle, as the scene is supposed to be seen from the little girl's eyes, a way to invite the spectator (us) in the picture. And the border of the postcard is "almost" the frame of the door...

But thanks anyway for the comments, nice ones! ;)
