Three times now my CPU has been running at 100% with hardly anything open (yes I made sure a scan wasnt running). My computer would of course start jerkin up and laggin and the only way to shake the 100% was to restart the computer. I have dual 3.2Ghz Extreme Edition. I ran a virus scan and it picked up nothing. I still have 350GB of HD space left, 2GB of RAM and when I checked my process it was saying 98-99% by Explorer.

Common, uncommon? Any help?

Have you recently checked your HDD, and have you checked your power saving feature? Explorer can use up a lot of CPU resources when it is doing some background system tasks like rebuilding file index, saving restore point and going into/waking up from hibernation.

It could be anything really. But if it is explorer that is giving you the problem, my best bet would be a virus.

It could be any of a number of things, such as: drive indexing, system restore, corrupt .avi files, virus, antivirus software, software firewall, bad connection between some hardware etc.

From Task Manager, try killing Explorer.exe, and then restarting explorer.exe

When it comes back, is still going at it?

cant you see in process thumbnails which process is running when this cpu charge occurs?

I'm surprised no one mentioned Spyware/Adware yet. A virus would be a bit more discreet.
