Can reference images be loaded into Zbrush somehow to allow modeling in front and side views? I don't actually own Zbrush so I'm trying to find out a few things that are important to me before I go and buy it. Thanks.

Yes, you can have a reference image on a layer. You can also have four-views like in a 3D program, with the aid of a free plugin.

Do a search on Reference Image in the zbrushcentral forum. All your questions are already answered there. While you are there check out the Quick Links section. And you can download not only the PDF manual, but video tutorials and QuickStart Pdf's
