Hi Guys ,

Ok i am going CRAZY! , I just got my new boxx loaded with xp64 , hooked it up and it does not connect to the internet. The dsl works but my cable internet does not. For some reason it cannot get a ip adress from the cable modem. I just spent 70 minutes on the phone with a comcast tech support guy trying every possible way to fix it to no avail.

Does anyone with a cable modem have similar problems with win xp64 or asus a8n-sli motherboard? (cant think of anything else that might cause the problem)

thanks very much in advance.
Ali

Is the DSl cable running thorugh the same connection, or do you have two Rj-45 slots (or whatever you use) if you have dual - switch the cables over and make sure it is not the network connection, rather then an issue with the cable modem itself :)

I'm running a cable modem in x64 and it's working flawlessly...

Also check your firewall settings, if you have one - turn it off just to be sure - that will blovk the retrieval of the ip address - turn the firewall off and restart to test this, i know mine wouldn't update with a new exception until i restarted.

I'm kinda all over the place withy suggestions, but iwhat you says points to a number of posibilites :)

Goodluck!

Ali,

I've got your exact set up running with no connection issues. If you don't get this fixed call me on Monday morning and we'll figure it out.

What have you tried so far?

Sometimes when you switch from using one computer on a cable modem to using another, you will have to shut the cable modem off for a few minuts in order to flush its memory. Shut off your system as well. Once its been off for a good 5 minutes or so it should be ok to power the modem up again. Once the modem is up and doing its thing, power up your system.

If this is what the cable guy told you to do, then uh.. nm :) But this usually fixes problems when I have them.

I also have experienced a slight improvement in connection reliability when I changed Speed/duplex settings in my device manager from Autonegotiation 1000FD to Full Autonegotiation. Keep in mind I have a K8WE though. And I go through a router.

But my cable modem appears to be somewhat old and could not handle the traffic my network spits out at it :)

Thanks for the suggestions but no luck.

when I connect the cable it tries to aquire a network adress then says "limited or no connectivity on the network port" the same cable connected to my old computer with my cable modem works and the same cable connected to my roommates DSL modem works on the new computer. I have no idea what to do but its quite annoying :(

I tried:

rerinstalling windows
shutting down the modem for 5 minutes and reconnecting
tried different cables
reinstalled drivers for the ethernet card

It sounds like they might not have fixed something from XP SP2 :)

Try unchecking the box that says "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" (under the properties tab of your ethernet card). If that doesn't work try assigning a static IP address to the PC (same properties tab, choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click properties). Another thing to try is setting the network speed manually from auto negotiate to forced 10Mbit half duplex (under device manager).

edit: Make sure that power save is turned off for the NIC (also under device manager).

I have no idea why but it suddenly started working. Maybe turning off that warning pref did the trick. thanks novadude.
