View Full Version : 'How Do I Start'
Hello guyz,
I have a problem and I will need you guyz to please help me.
I just started with digital art and I really dont know where to start from. I am trully an amateur if I must confess tho' I have been sketching for a while now and suddenly got interested in digital art.
I need to know what to get to start off...presently I just got 2 softwares someone recomended to me which are, Cycling '74's Jitter and Adobe Photoshop. Apart from this, I need you guyz to kindly tell what else to do. I am completely 'lost'.
Another factor is the kind of computer and hardware needed.., please have at the back of your mind that I am on a budget.
Will be glad if someone helps.
Regards,

Welcome to the forums :)
Well, the software really depends on what you want to do. If you're just interested in 2D art, then photoshop will serve you fine.
For hardware...well, knowing your current set up would be nice ;)
2D isn't nearly as demanding as 3D so what you have now will likely serve you, especially while you're starting off.
If you're serious, you can look to getting a graphics tablet. If you don't know what these are, look at www.wacom.com or simply google grpahics tablert and you'll find other brands aswell. If you want help looking for a tablet, run a search in this forum, there are many topics on the subject :)
If you have any specific questions about your hardware you can ask here, however, if you have problems with specific software, you'll probably have more luck in it's forum. If you scroll down frm the forum "Home" you'll see a forum specifically for photoshop, they will most likely be able to answer your question much more skillfully - you're getting a collection of people here, that area is more specified :)
Goodluck with your new hobby!

1. The Hardware.. if your gonna start off by using photoshop, you dont really need a super fast computer, and if your gonna buy one, make sure it will last for a long time(long life)--meaning you can upgrade to it later on, just incase you decide to jump in to Video/3D world. for memory ram, maybe you can start off using 512 mb of ram if your on a budget, but if you can afford 1 gig of ram, much better.:)
2.ok you can start off by using photoshop, just focus on 1 software for now, try to learn as much as you can from it, before learning another one, itl just make you confious if you try to learn 2 softwares at the same time.
3. unleashed all your creative juices, start thinking of an idea for you art. do lots of digital paintings. join lots of online contest to practice you skills.
now...go crazy with it:)
thank you guyz I appreciate all your post and I like all your kind responses. I think I am begining to get co-ordinated with these little tips you guys have given me.
Concerning Wacom tablets, a digital artist who works with Corel painter told me something about it but I never took it seriously...I'll visit the website now to see what they have. I really dont know the feeling I am gonna get on drawing on something different from paper/sketchpads but I guess I should be able to scale thru, since I already know thw basic principles for sketching....
Concerning computers...some other questions I'll like to ask is what graphic card do I get...I think I like products from Nvidia but I really dont know which of the product to pick...do I really have to go for something expensive...
2ndly, I'll like to know what kind of computer monitors...I've never liked the 14" monitors for computer arts...what about 21" or 23". I could get a fairly used one somewhere at a reasonable price.
O! I think I am getting to like this website I just hope by the time I start appreciating my works I would't get used to it and forget my sketch pads and easel... :argh:
