View Full Version : xsi 5 fnd 32bit: render->bluescreen->hard reboot
Haven't found anything using the search, so here i go...
I downloaded the Foundation 5 Trial, installed it on my desktop PC, and it works like a charm (falling in love with it, but that's not the case).
Now I installed it on my laptop, and everything seems to be fine, altough, when i hit "render" it renders, yes, but after the render is complete i see the blue screen of death as it flashes milisecond before the laptop reboots hard way. So i have no idea what this screen says.
BUT, the render region works fine, no crashes with multiply updates, closing, etc.
I set the renderer to log basic and detail debug info - where i can find these logs? Maybe it'll give some clue...
Specs:
Mobile Sempron 2800+
512 ddr
SiS M760GX graphic card
WinXP Home Edition
This is a make or break for me, as i will be mostly using my laptop... so - help, please...
TIA

I am not sure what the problem is as i dont know what the BESOD error was, but have you tried limiting the memory useage in the render options? Rendering things can take alot of RAM, and if you dont have much it could cause problems with it trying to use something thats not there.
I don't think that's the case, as it happens even with blank viewports renderings.
The error id is: BCCode=1000008e BCP1=C0000005 BCP2=BFA8C978 BCP3=AD035128 BCP4=00000000 OSVer=5_1_2600&SP=2_0 Product=768_1
Googling it produces no results.
I still don't know what the BSOD says, as it flashes just for a second...

Blue screen occur when a driver in kernel mode crashes, so this no doubt a problem with the video driver. An application cannot produce a blue screen on its own.

I noticed the XSI Foundation paths are weird. If you render to a file, it was defaulting to "S:\" or something crazy. I had to change it to my documents folder. Try setting up a project before you render out a scene, and maybe the paths will be okay. This issue was causing a crash for me, but not a blue screen. This could be it, since render region works, but rendering to a file does not.
Ok, my problem evolved. As Luceric said this was an issue with the video driver. Easy to fix? Nah, i'm not so lucky. I downloaded newest driver from SiS site, and guess what - still crashes. Uninstalled it, try to install some native windows driver, but it didn't found one. Then i fired up xsi, rendered, and... it works. just like that. But now i am left without a proper driver - it's just some standard vga windows thingy. But i guess i can live with that... for now. maybe i'll write to SiS and they'll fix it in the next version.Anyway, thanks or help. I am now closer to order xsi 5 student licence. ;)

Best card for any 3D app:
-NVIDIA
-ATI
-anything else
SiS chipsets are mostly doing several things at the same time, and are not dedicated videochips. Also SiS doesn't do OpenGL, what will be very convenient to have, running ANY 3D app.
Also the "weird" paths mostly are in the demoscenes, a simple check before rendering will overcome that.
Get yourself a laptop with an NVIDIA or ATI if you want to do proper 3D, the SiS chipset will be in your way all the time.

This is something that may be occuring if your current project is 'xsi_sample', which afaik has no render_picture folder. Try creating a new project.

XSI is not certified to run on XP Home edition, you may want to change that.

I never ran into problems related to Windows XP home. It always ran fine.
