This plugin does exactly what I need, but as I don't know AE well enough, I was wondering if I could this using AE alone.

thanks

There is always the manual way of masking over time.

Also, look into using the paint tools to mask over time.

If your text is from illustrator, you can copy and paste it into a layer as a mask, then use the write on effect (comes with AE productio bundle) to draw it on over time.

Check out the help files with keywords on paint masking and or write on.

Good luck.

Just use the vegas filter, you should be able to get the mask with it ^^

Absoutely - Vegas will do that, and if you repeat the layer, change the colour and offset it, you can probably emulate the '3D'ness too.

Thanks for the replies.

Figured out how Vegas works on a path, either written or copied from illustrator. Works like I want.

But the problem is I have quite a lot of text and Vegas doesn't seem to recognise the contour of the type on the type layer as the image contour, which would be perfect and extremely easy, instead Vegas takes the contour of the whole type layer as the contour.

The only solution I see now, is that I have to outline the type in illustrator and paste it in AE, which is a chore with the amount of text I have to deal with. Isn't there a way to take a type layer and automatically extract a mask from the type?

thanks

Select your type layer, then go to the top menus a select Layer > Create Outlines
