I'm sure many people have encountered this problem. for the parts of my character that are symmetrical i just modelled half of the character, duplicated it, then chenged the x value to -1 to get the left side. now when I apply a bump map, one side bumps in and the other bumps out, is there any way i can fix this?

This is most likely because the normals are reversed on the mirrored half of the geometry. Go to Display>Polygon Components>Normals in order to see if that is the case. You can then select them and Reverse them from the Edit Polygons>normals>reverse menu.

I am assuming you are using Polygons. If you are then you can use the Murror Geometry tool to make the other half of your character and have it join it together for you.
