View Full Version : Maya 4.5 BUGS -- Connection Editor and plusMinusAverage

Hi there!

I don't know if any of you noticed, but there have been a few minor changes in v 4.5 of Maya that I don't like at all... I'm still trying to figure a way around them, and therefore I still haven't installed Maya 4.5 in my computer. I wish I could, because I really want to try the volumetric lights, but those program errors are most buggering!

The main problem is that they have changed the syntax of the connectAttr procedure. I have some characters rigged in Maya 4.0 that work wonderfully, but I used some plusMinusAverage utilities inside the rig, namely for hands attributes, facial expression clamping, and so on.

As good as they work in Maya 4.0, if you open up the character in Maya 4.5 you don't get an error message, but -- oh surprise -- the connections are not there anymore! So you can imagine my face at that moment, can't you? The characters are NOT working!!

After my main deception, I started investigating a little bit. My idea was to create some simple scene using the plusMinusAverage utility, and then to check out if it didn't work anymore, or what!

In came the next surprise -- the connection Editor, one of the most powerful windows in Maya, CAN'T "connect Next Available" anymore!!!!!!!!

So I had to try to make the connection with MEL, and this time I could do it allright. I wrote this scene from Maya 4.5 to MayaAscii, and did another scene that looked exactly the same in Maya 4.0, just to compare between them...

The difference, as it turned out to be, is that the MEL command connectAttr doesn't work anymore with the -na flag, which is how Maya 4.0 left the connections to figure out for every session. In Maya 4.5, Maya forces the connection number, be it [0], [1], [2], or whatever.

So the problem can be solved by writing your MB scenes into MA, and changing the scripting of the connectAttr command, one by one.

Since this can take me a while, I still haven't got around the time to do it... And I still have Maya 4.0 installed in my computer!

So I'm just writing this down to help anybody who can be stuck with my very same problem -- there IS a solution after all. And, of course, I'd love to know if anybody has found a quicker solution than mine of going line-to-line of the MayaAscii to mend the connections.

I reported the bug to A|W. I hope they will make a little patch or correct this in the next version... :-(

The final intention of this loooong thread is that I don't feet happy with A|W's new version of Maya. It can be wonderful in multiple other aspects, but only for this little letdown I think they are not paying much attention to us users... Anybody else has seen more Maya 4.5 bugs that sould be reported?

Thanks :-)

4.5 has the most amount of api and mel changes since version 1.0. As with all software you have to break some functionality to make things better in newer versions.

This is the exact reason why you don't change versions in the middle of a project. True of all versions of all 3d software, not just maya. I know some people that are using versions of maya that are 2-3 years old simply for this reason. This is also the reason why a/w will come out with bug fixes for older versions even when a new milestone versions of the software are comming out(for example 2.53 was comming out at the same time 3.0 came out).
