View Full Version : Greyscale Images and DEM Map Questions
BUZZFX 09-28-2005, 05:39 AM Can a greyscale image be converted to geometry in C4D?
Can it (greyscale image) be converted to polygons?
Another question,
DEM maps. Does anyone know where to get free ones and how difficult are they to use in C4D? I've seen some amazing Terragen-Like terrains created with them and was wondering if someone could shed some light on using them in C4D?

use the relief object, or use displacement. as for DEM i've never tried, the DEM import in c4d, maybe someone else could shed osme light on that.
Dems can also be used in the same way as other grayscale images. There are free ones available: search in google or try this link: http://members.fortunecity.com/eco4/giseco/id8.html

DEMs import directly into Cinema--works very well.
Hi,
In the June 2004 issue of 3D Attack-The CINEMA 4D Magazine we have a tutorial on using DEM maps in CINEMA 4D. This issue is a free download and you can find it here:

DEMs open directly in Cinema. It works perfectly. The only issue is knowing the correct scale of the file, and knowing that some have a different Z (Y in Cinema) scale factor. DEMs are metric, even from the United States Geological Survey.
GISdepot is a good website to find DEMs.

FYI, GISdepot.com and www.gisdepot.com are presently "Under Construction".

It's working ok for me. Direct link to DEM page: http://data.geocomm.com/dem/

Edit: I think the link gisdepot is wrong. It should be: http://www.gisdatadepot.com

Paintguy,
It's my understanding that there are different data formats that DEM info can be packaged in; and, I believe Cinema only reads one of them. It's sort of like the Autocad dxf game. But there are progs out there that will convert dems to diff formats--even making imgs out of the dem data. Seems 3d Artist had some good info on this. Let's see . . . yes here is the link:

click on other apps and then down to the "d's".
