One month into the challenge and here is my concept sketch.

The story behind this sketch is that there is some kind of disaster about to hit town. The town is disserted except for the one guy who is cool with this kind of thing happening.

I’m trying to understate what’s going on here. Before I came up with my concept, I did a google search for famous photographs. The ones that I liked the most were ones that had people showing emotion and were spontaneous. So even though there is a catastrophic event taking place in the image, the main focus will be on the man and the dog, and how they’re interacting with each other.

I’ve started blocking in my image in 3D. The camera has a fairly wide lens, and the film back placement has been altered to give it that two point perspective look.

This is the involved idea with a philosophical shade! I'd be very interested to catch sight of its progress. Good luck! :)

alex.h. and Atris, thanks for your encouraging words. I haven’t had a lot to show for myself lately, but that’s about to change.

In the meantime, here is the pavement and gutter modelled. The cracks in the pavement were a bit of a pain to model, but an important detail none the less.

Here’s a fire hydrant for my scene. It’s not important to the story, but a nice little detail for the overall composition.

I’ve changed the camera position slightly to give the composition a more dramatic feel. The thing I’ve been spending most of time on is the building in the fore ground. I felt I had to model the individual bricks because of how close they are to the camera. The rest of the buildings will be much simpler, relying more on textures. I’ve also included some power lines to the right of screen. I like the way they’re going to break up the skyline, and I think I’ll add some similar structures to the back ground later on.

I’ve just finished modelling building number two. It is much less detailed the first one. The closest two buildings on the right hand side will have a similar level of detail to this one.

I don’t know why it took so long for me to make this latest building. I guess sometimes things just don’t go your way.

Here’s just the latest building. I’ll be getting onto some more interesting character work soon.

It’s been a few days since my last post, due to lack of internet access, and I now have a back log of images to post.

Here is the modelling stage of the background finished. If I get time I would like to add some grass growing through the pavement.

david.mig and rankstein – Thanks for your comments.:)

I’m going to post the first character submission soon. I’m thinking of changing my concept slightly. I think I’ll forget about the dog and just have the man standing there looking at his watch. In the background the sun will be in the sky, except it will be several times it’s regular size.:scream:

Here’s the man’s hand. I’m going to model the head next.

I still have to do the ears as well as a few other details, but I feel the essence of his character is there.

I’ve more or less finished modelling the head. I’ve given him some ears and a hat since my last update. I'll be modelling his jacket next.

Here’s the latest on the jacket I’ve been modelling. I still have to add some wrinkles around the torso, and the ones around the arms will be done after I’ve posed him.

I’ve added some wrinkles to the jacket. I’m satisfied enough now to move on.

The modelling of the man is more or less finished. I haven’t put any wrinkles in the trousers; I’ll do that later when I’ve posed him. The next step is the texturing of the street. I want to get away from this model for a bit, as I’m finding it hard to be objective.

Good models. The man's harms works very well. Is the model rigged ?

Hello medunecer and nemirc. Thanks for you comments.

medunecer – I haven’t rigged him yet. I plan to texture him, then rig him and pose him, and then finally rework some of his clothing creases. I’m not sure how successful the last step will be though.

Here’s the first bit of texturing done. This building was fairly laborious to texture because it is so close to the camera.

Not much to say really. Here’s building 2 textured.

I’ve just finished texturing the pavement. Each object has their main textures as well as an overall “grime” layer applied on a different UV set, so the texture will be able to flow from one object to another.

Here’s my latest texturing effort. I still have one more building to texture, as well as a few other details, before I move on to texturing the man.

The road takes up a large area in the frame, and the size of the image file required to texture it would have ground my machine to a halt. The alternative route that I took was to create it using procedural textures. Excluding the texture map shown, I also used procedural texturing on the wall of the building.

Well, my friend, really a great texturing work! And the building models are great too. Did you use some references? Did you take photos of your town? I think you're doing a very googd job!

Hoju
11-23-2005, 02:59 AM
Hello again, medunecer. The only reference I used was a few pictures from a google search. I ended up using only one or two elements from each picture to make up each building. If time wasn’t an issue, I would love to spend more time researching architecture, to make the design a lot stronger.:)
