Here's the concept for my Spectacular piece, it's the war among the angels described in Paradise Lost.

Four tone study. I'm working zoomed out pretty far, so it still feels like a thumbnail.

Here is the current version of my piece, War in Heaven. Its in a line art stage, I'm still moving things around, and quite a lot of it is still very rough. I'm actually working in Flash for this portion; while there are better drawing programs out there, it fits my needs. Once the drawing is complete, I'll export a version out to Photoshop for painting.

Here's another stage in the drawing progression. I'll probably be working on the bodies on the ground next. Not too far away from begining the photoshop painting, I'm reasonably happy with the composition, but I may experiment some more with it.

Latest version of the drawing, I've altered some proportions and posing.

Latest drawing. I've expanded the canvas to be more of a panoramic format; also, some more pose revisions and some definition of the piles of bodies.

I'm interested in seeing what kind of colors you choose.
Keep up the good work and good luck.

This is the final version of the drawing portion of this piece. I'm fairly happy with the composition at the moment and I feel that it's time to move on to painting.

Thanks for the encouragement 2tacos, I was beginning to wonder if anyone ever looked at my thread. I'm planning on twilight for the hour and the main light source will be god. The palette will be fairly limited, I haven't entirely decided yet what the main colours will be.

twilight is perfect for this piece! one thing i might keep in mind while painting this is making sure to give a great sense of depth. of course everything needs that consideration but i think yours does doubly.

I've begun colouring, its going to be blue keyed and the values are going to be pretty dark.

Yeah, I agree the depth needs to work well, especially in a large picture like this. The aerial perspective should be challenging to paint, but first the palette needs to be finished.

Here's the current version. I've been working on god and the shepherd, as the main and secondary focal points they're both important. As god is the primary light source, he didn't seem to make sense as cool colours (blue) like i the previous version and I also wanted to have a bit more variation in colouring him.

Another stage of development. I'm working out the colours/values for the sheep, as you can see, I'm currently undecided.

Your painting is making me think of Flanders and God Okely Dokely'ing each other ;)
But on a serious note, I think you face an interesting decision. If you want God to be giving off a lunar-like light, you would nearly be forced to make Him look almost ghostlike in quality, which could be an interesting choice. On the other hand, you could have Him in the color scheme of a rusty deep red/orange sunset, which I think could be equally interesting.

That's an interseting idea about making god into a sunset, I think I'll check into that. I've been planning on making him somewhat transparent, I haven't experimented too much with that yet. Thanks for the suggestions.

I finally realized that I needed to recalibrate my monitor to photoshop. This image is much closer to what I'm trying to achieve in terms of colours and values. I've also been working on the aerial perspective.

...I'm planning on twilight for the hour and the main light source will be god. ... :scream: heeee! good luck. Initially I wasn't sure about the 'big beard in the sky', but I'm looking forward to seeing how you deal with it now. Good luck.

I've done a little more work on the values of the landscape, sheep and shepherds, they were all a little too dark. I think my monitor calibration might be finished. Also, I've added the sheep dog's silhouette and another sheep to help balance out the picture.

Thanks, I've got a few things in mind for the big beard. I've been going back and forth on having god partly composed of clouds or just his beard. Maybe I'll go back to working on him soon.

Another stage. I've finished all the silhouettes now, plus I've been doing some value progressions for the angels depth. I haven't adjusted for god's aura yet, some layering issues.

Hmm, it seems that this is always too dark on monitors other than the iMac I work on, so I've lightened up the values a lot. I hope that I can sort out this calibration issue before it makes me crazy.

All right, I've finally started working on god's beard. Its going to be made out of clouds (plus his eyebrows and hair on head). Its sort of half started, I bounced around and started up a couple more angels.

This is a wonderful painting. I hope that you finish it. Even though it is to late for the challenge it could really push you to learn more about CG painting and be very satisfying to see completed. I hope to see you in the next challenge.
