would "greeble" be the best plugin for putting detail on a spaceship?

I depends on what type of detail you want! If you want random panels of various heights etc. then perhaps. You'll have to experiment. Otherwise, you'll either have to model the detail in by hand, or use a displacement map.

Crazy that you ask. I just got a call from a guy today asking that very same question. Greeble should be able to do what your asking in one click.

Of course you should also consider the fact that greeble will give you tons of detail, but it can be very generic. Not to mention if a cg person sees your model they'll go "Oh, he just used greeble". It's like a photoshop person using the lensflare filter. So you may wish to consider building the panels by hand, or use a combination of hand modeled panels and greebled panels, just to add variety.

To add to what Neil has said, look at how you combine greebles with other modifiers or secondary greeble modifiers. What works quite well is running 1 greeble with no widgets, have sidefaces selected in the greeble mod, then add another greeble on top of that.

Here's a nice item on making greebles by hand :)

awesome article.

yes, the greeble plugin is good for a quick and nasty, but generally, if it can be done in one click, you should think about adding to it :) (with, perhaps the notable exception of "save" :))

The tip to use type is a great one.

http://www.1001freefonts.com/

has some fonts which are great for this, anything blocky and abstract works well.

One other script which is good for adding detail is section scan

It basically automates creating cross section splines.

You can also add polyboost to your stuff. Itīs grat to mix differen patterns.

Yep, Topology is great for that....

Selecting edges of the poly and create shape from splines is good for creating pipes and trims. Sweep in 7.5 is a good one as well.

Max is pretty well served in this area... the problem is it's very easy to make it collapse under the weight of the geometry this kind of thing creates, especially if you're not using instances.
