First off, upgrade! R3 is almost 3 years old. Now doing DOF in general tends to be best left to doing in post by rendering the scene as two separate layers - this gives you more control and tends to be faster. That said, there are still times when it should be done in camera or better yet via raytracing (optical simulation).
R4 added DOF in camera as a multipass effect, but if you're stuck with R3 then you could try either using the freeware version of VRay (www.chaoticdimension.com) or look for the Amuze DOF script from Claes Wikdahl.
