View Full Version : WIP: Yahtzee
Rasmus Pultz 09-26-2005, 02:07 PM Hello everyone :) This is a still I'm currently working on. My goal is to achieve photorealism. I guess it will be the first finished still for my portfolio.
Comments and critics is greatly appreciated ;) - especially on the photorealism. I know the still is quite uinteresting, however, the goal is simply photorealism - not so much evocative etc.

Software: 3dsmax, Vray.
I am already aware of the issue of over-bright light in the upper right corner - this will be fixed in the next update.
Thanks to m@ for some quality feedback :thumbsup:

Nice work.
i think when you fix the lighting in the corner the feel of the picture will change.

Nice, but that paper is too CG-perfect looking. Although paper can and sometimes does lay perfectly flat on a surface, it usually doesn't. Also looks a little too clean, might want to give the printing on the paper some flaws, and maybe some fuzzy paper texture. otherwise looking pretty nice, the DOF especially helps.

@TriKK
Thanks alot :) I guess you're right, we'll see on the next update.
@Slakerr
Thank you - I'll try to add some more dust and fluff for the next update ;)
@Twixus
Many thanks :D I hope it will..
@Mezza550
Thanks alot for the comments and crits ;) I used one of those Yathzee pad of paper (that can be bought) as reference. The paper is very sharp and thin. I'll try to make it less perfect and also perhaps a bit more flawed and dirty.
Update coming soon :)

Wow, really need to look hard to find flaws in this one!
I see only 2 flaws.
First, the dice on the left side has an odd shadow...looks like a fake drop shadow applied in Photoshop although it probably isn't, it just looks wrong.
Second, the paper is too flat. This has already been mentioned. Real paper is going to have a crease in it somewhere causing a small air gap under it, have a tiny bit of barely perceptible texture...you could also try changing the specular level of the blue ink on the paper!

@stuh505
Thanks for the crits - very useful :thumbsup: I agree about the weird shadows. I think it's because of the DOF. I'll look into it ;)
Small update:

I've tried to make a small air gap near the corners as seen. It looked more subtle in the viewport, so I'll probably make it a bit smaller for the next update. Also, I'm not completely satisfied with the ink spot on the paper.
It's a bit tough making fast tweaks because of the rendertime (about 5 hours).
Comments and critics very welcome :)

The ink spot still looks a little funny to me. I don't think you need it. For the paper, there should be some creases. I know that in our yahtzee box, we just toss the papers in there and they get jumbled around and usually have rabbit ears, or creases down the center from being folded in half....because the paper still looks unrealistically flat farther away from the camera. The slight air gap does help though.
What general renderer/settings are you using for this?

Awsome job man!!:thumbsup: I love how the paper has a small gap and I think the ink spot is fine.
