Hi Simoens! Nice sketch you have there. May I ask which book of Jules Verne inspired you? The concept looks really nice and different from other entries. I wish you all the best :)

Here the process for create the body off
the spider crab:
1 photos from the web for models
2 basic shape with nurbs on rhino and export in
mesh
3 LPM adjusts on max to obtain only quads
4 and finely the best part on ZB

Here the same way than the body, for middle legs, you can have an idea of the spider crab assembly.

today i try to find the best material,
after many tests, i decide to divide on more timethe mesh, and add noise on local area,i create a "max blend texture", the bump mapping will add to the noise with a different scale, but the rendering was always not great, so photoshop help me to end my test.

Hey, that's a great job on the texturing. Just make your sea models look wet and they gonna be like real.

i search the best camera position,
and play with the scale of the two
caractere, the spider-crab must be
very big but mustn't be unreal.

hello everybody, and thank for your comments,i went at the seaside on sunday to find some "models" on the beach, i use photos of them to ended my spider_crab,it's always the same idea than before, here you can see the wip of the top leg, 3 hours to modelise, 30 minutes on max to make a basic shape in quads,i use deform pictures to help me,
i export on the amazing ZB,2 hours later i have a very detail mesh with a uv set, it's really magic!!
i just have to paint the texture tomorow, i also start to make other items for the background.

Very nice work on the crab, I almost want to boil it and eat, the only critic is the eyes, they're suppose to be smaller and round, that's all otherwise great work.

i finished my IK setup, now it's fully animate, i just have to find the best pose.
for texturing i use tree layers (paint in the ZB projection master):
bump, diffus, and a mask for the shiny parts, nothing more.
sometime "less is more".

Excellent Texturing. Looks very real. can't wait to see you texure the Coral Reef.
2000 Leauges - Nice.

Here i create the eggs on the back ,i don't know yet if i will keep this detail for the final image, but as you can see it's not long to modelise..... i will spend many time for the light effects (caustics....), the background, and the other caractere.

i finished the crab, and now i'm working on the man,i explain in an example the workflow i will use for the man:
1 i make a "basic" full body in poly (only quads)
2 i export the mesh in ZB, it give me texture coordinates,i will spend a lot of time to play with the higher divisions levels. i export the first level back in MAX.
3 i make a skinning of this low level, and after find the best pose for my model, and export again in zb
4 ZB is remenbering all the details i added in the higher levels but in the pose i choosed, and i export the hight resolution mesh in MAX one last time with it's mapping.

no uv unwrap or displace map, the only technical step is the first with quad modeling.

I hope the spectator will see the man first and wonder: what tis guy look like that ?!
and after will see the spider crab...
that why the fisher is more lighted, i also play with the mimesis of the crab (almost the same color than the rock, seaweeds on its back, hidden in the shadow)
what the story tell? you can only see an evil monster from deep, but perhaps the spider crab is afraid by that "stange fish" with his knife and want to protect the eggs on its back.
i hope you like @+
