The goal: The goal of this image is to explore the emotional plight a father and son in the face of a spectacular event which also unfortunately carries with it the promise of certain death.

The setting is a sports stadium. A nuclear missile is launching from a previously hidden location in the center of the sports field in retaliation.(Mutually assured destruction)

The father and son will be in the left foreground, the father at an oblique angle and the son turned toward our perspective.

A hostile missile will be somewhere in the top fore/background, racing toward the city behind the rim of the stadium(also not there yet)

As you might have guessed, Ive only spent a short period of time so far, but I wanted to get my concept posted as quickly as possible.

Ideas on perspective and composition, especially color scheme(the colors are mostly place holders so far) Im thinking a deep purple in the shadows, with a crimson and orange light bouncing off of the stadium details.

Started having serious doubts about the composition. Its going to have lack of depth problems, so ill putz around and decide what to do tomorrow.

Ok so here was totally unrelated to spectacular sketch done out of frustration while I figured out what I was doing. It's gone now.

Hey Tacos,

I like your first concept the best......love any image which shows emotional plight. I think if you want that concept to work and be very dramatic, you might want to consider changing the camera angle of the image.

How about an overhead shot of the father and son looking up to the sky, their expressions enthralled by what they are witnessing. They are standing on wet pavement and in the puddle is the reflection of the missile screaming towards them.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am taking into account all options on my concept. The latest sketch isnt really a concept im entering, i just felt like doing something.

I think I might start with the color scheme, then work in the characters first and figure the rest out as it works itself out.

Marauders hitch on to rockets with radioactive warheads and ride them in to battle, jumping off at a "safe" distance to mop up the survivors.

I know it looks like I'm not doing much with each update, but this is just my second digital painting, so I have many workflow problems to iron out. I think ive figured out what I need to move on to detailing the background, or adding the characters on the rocket(basic poses perhaps)

I then plan on increasing to beyond the suggested production print siez, and scaling it back after having done the details.

Comments on the general composition, especially colors(which are not all in, but I am once again not too experienced in) are appreciated.

It looks like just a little more fleshing in, then deal with the rocket, and Im off to the color.

Hi James, its looking pretty good, I like the viewpoint from behind the rocket. I also like the idea of marauders hanging on to the sides, it kinda sounds like some kind of biker gang. I was thinking that maybe instead of a the stadium to have a cityscape as the target? You could have the city still pretty far away and maybe have them retaliating with their own missiles in the middle ground (maybe with people attatched to them too?)

I was dragging my feet the last few days, but today I decided to just jump right in and start on the "detailed" forms for the concept stage, starting with the foreground.

Bitter Cheese: I like the suggestion of enemy missiles with riders, and I may consider adding that if time looks like it will permit. I didnt explain, but the setting is no longer a stadium, and is indeed a cityscape. The looming obelisk structures are for defensive purposes along the walls of the city. An opposing missile has struck the rocket my Marauders are riding in the foreground.
