Well I'm sure glad I caught Aurety's thread on snails, it was a great help! Here is my work in progress - bit odd because the requirements are for photorealism but cuddlier, not cartoony and without the yuk factor, so my thinking at the moment was to hint at the body looking roundish, not hugely defined kinda like a cuddly toy... :hmm:

Any comments for future ref appreciated!

Thats very nice! Yes--Aurety's thread was a great resource.

Now put some bones in those antennae and wiggle them around (I should talk).

Wow Boxy ! Just great, better than mine for the sss looking. With the 9.5, I should try to bake my textures for the shell. I will share it if you want.

Thanks for all the comments! I hope the screen shot below answers most of the questions. The sss effect is actually a fusion with sss and a fresnel, I can't recall now why I tried that but it seemed to work and so stayed that way. The selected light is a negative light to counter bleaching out in the antennae - otherwise the main light is casting area shadows and everything else is back/side fill and a top light trying to bring out highlights to make the shell look less flat but that isn't working at the moment. I might even end up painting in the highlights because its for a stills campaign. The shell is hand painted in bodypaint, I briefly tried a procedural like Aurety's but I wasn't very good at it :) also I think the fact that the shell is no longer a tube made the mapping trickier...Aurety - cool if you get time I'd love to see how a baked procedural might look. Although the client is ok with this shell it does look hand painted to me - much appreciated.
hightillidie you can download a C4d file of mine and Aurety's shells at this thread:

I'll try and make a slower spinner movie once the deadline is up.
Cheers
