View Full Version : Video Games with FireGL 8800
b.Schulz 11-10-2002, 12:08 AM I can't play any games with this card....I installed Warcraft 3 and all I got was sound....and a black screen. So I know it's running but I can't see anything. Same thing with my Doom 3 Alpha...first level only though...levels 2 and 3 crash before the game even loads up. Any ideas on how to get this card to play games? :hmm:

Hey Schulz,
Does OGL in apps work ok? If you can, try downloading 3dmark 2001 SE just to check that D3D is working ok. (www.madonion.com). If its not...try reinstalling Directx 8.1. www.microsoft.com/directx
If that doesn't work. See if another set of 8800 drivers are available. If that doesn't work, take a screen shot of the Options rollout in the 8800 drivers panel (hit printscreen button by scrollock, and paste into a graphics editing program), and post it to the forum. I haven't seen an 8800 drivers panel in a while so I can't do it by memory.

I tested my direct x (direct 3d and direct draw) and those checked out (I did this with the direct 3d diagnostics file I found in the direct x folder on my local drive). Here are the screen shots of the Fire GL 8800's menus. Oh and I was able to play Jedi Knight 2 Outcast....but Warcraft 3 and my Doom 3 alpha don't work at all...I didn't know which pic you wanted to here are 3 of em.

Get some shots of the Adjustment and Configuration ones (the tabs on the last page).
Weird that jedi knight worked and not the others.

here they are....I ran a 3dMark 2001 test and everything turned out fine. Does refresh rate on my monitor matter....does that affect speeds/framerates? I can use either 60hz or 85 hz without noticing my sceen flickering...so I'm wondering which I should use.
Here are the shots of those tabs.

Quick notes....
Look in the profiles for something near gamelike. Max5 for example. Check for War3 patches before executing it. It could be the game refresh (as sometimes the registry refresh and the card refresh don't match) but that doesn't seem to be this particular problem.
Do any other games other then doom3 (Which I'm not even going to attempt to get to work, as it truely is an alpha) and war3 give you problems?
I'm wondering if you can pull up a war3 config and see if its set to a non existent accelerator or something.
OR you know what? Maybe the gamma setting is fubared and its set to zero, and the reason you get a black screen and sound, is cause the game's working, its just really really really dark.
Just more suggestions.

Thanks for the tips...I'll check it out. Yeah I don't really need or care to get Doom 3 running...I can wait for an actual demo....but I'd like to get my other games up and running. I'm gonna go check my Warcraft .cfg file. Thanks again...I'll keep ya posted.

Now that I'm looking through it all....I can't see any ways to get any type of warcraft 3 config files. Dam! Now I still have no idea what to do.

OK, I got it to work....Warcraft that is....I had to add -opengl to the end of the target .exe files. Does that mean that it was having problems running the direct x??? So that's working now? What exactly does this do?

I have no idea. Sorry Schulz...when it gets to software, my abilities start diving like a fly covered in liquid goo.
Glad you got it working though!

I just found this out......"Apparently the ATI card won't go into 256 color mode and the chip architecture is strictly limited to CAD/DCC programs because this is a workstation card. It seems that NVIDIA has the advantage on this one because they have not left their gaming community out in the cold."
This really sucks. But on the bright side I have an excuse to get a new NV30 card when they come out. On the downside I'm kinda stuck with this dam card until then. I shoulda just got an ATI 9700pro, if only I had known this... Oh and last night I tried some maya certified drivers (because the regular ones were getting kinda screwy in maya) and the maya drivers fixed everything in maya...but now I can't get my warcraft game to play anymore... -sigh- I can't get a break with this dam thing.

Thats odd...warcraft III isn't 256 colors, its 16 bit or 32 bit....I wonder. There has to be some sort of configuration file somewhere you can tweak to let you get in.
It must be the intro movie thats screwing it up. I wonder if you could just bypass those.
I'll ask some people and see what they say.

think bout it this way: now you have more reason to work on your stuff ;).
distractions are plenty on my comp too.im not gonna install a single game on my new workstation(sound like an addict trying to go clean, dont i).
know of any good articles on nv30 tech?think they'll have a low-end flavor so as not to bust my wallet?

I heard that the new lower end NV30's aren't really going to be that great...like geforce 2's on crack or something. same with the lower end Ti series. Now the upper end of theses cards will be smoking!! But they will cost like $500 er something...which I don't have right now to spend on a card.

Yeah I'm trying not to avoid this post. I don't plan on loading games onto my new system but I'm sure its bound to happen, especially when Doom 3 comes out. id shooters are like digital smack to me. I got so sucked into Quake 3 I went to a hypnotist to quit playing, no joke.
